This 1961 large-band jazz date places Jimmy Witherspoon on the Reprise label in the company of some heavy hitters -- Teddy Edwards on saxophone, Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Gerald Wiggins on piano, trombonist Herbie Harper, bassist Jimmy Bond, and guitarist Al Viola -- just to name a few.
The contrast between the orchestra's pop-jazz leanings and Witherspoon's bluesy swing are sometimes hair-raising.
This is one of those recordings that offers a true starting point for the mature Witherspoon at the absolute top of his powers as a song interpreter and singer supported by a deeply sympathetic orchestra.

Jimmy Witherspoon laid out two great records in 1962 on Reprise, Spoon and this one.
The warmth of Witherspoon's voice on material like "Your Red Wagon," "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water," "Key to the Highway" (in one of the more unique versions ever recorded), and Jimmy Rushing's "Did You Ever" is on the other side of lonesome.
It's not as raucous as the original, but Witherspoon's smooth, clear, and deep register is beautifully complemented first by Wilson's solo and then by Webster's.

"Jimmy WItherspoon's "Singin the Blues" is already on one of the Top 25 Essential Lindy Hop CDs.
Many jazz critics pan Witherspoon's later work, in large part because his voice did start to fail him in later years, especially in live performances.
But the voice is not all gone on this album, and his vocal phrasing is always rich and "real." Moreover, it is the overall package, not just how Jimmy sings in isolation, that makes this album shine for Lindy Hoppers.

Heard at the peak of his powers, Witherspoon holds his own with a mighty group of veterans (trumpeter Roy Eldridge, both Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins on tenors, clarinetist Woody Herman, pianist Earl Hines, bassist Vernon Alley, and drummer Mel Lewis).
The other half of this CD features Witherspoon romping through ten mostly traditional blues songs two months later with Webster, baritonist Gerry Mulligan, pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Mel Lewis; the performance is equally exciting.
Highly recommended, this CD is the one truly essential Jimmy Witherspoon release.

 JIMMY WITHERSPOON/BLUE SPOON 180g LP - elusivedisc
I Wonder, the opening track, is the sort of slow, moody number that Jimmy Witherspoon masters so beautifully but the mood is soon broken up by the up-tempo It's A Low Down Dirty Shame which also features some fine solos by Burrell and Haynes.
Witherspoon updates the lyrics slightly in the introduction and gives it a sudden and direct ending with a 'BROKE' which probably still resounds in Rudy Van Gelder's studio.
Side A ends with It's All In The Game, a well-known ballad which, in Witherspoon's interpretation, is given an extra bluesy feeling.

Parker was with the band when it made a sensational debut at New York's Savoy Ballroom in 1942, but it began to lose its way once the military draft intervened, with McShann himself called up to serve in an anti-aircraft unit in 1944.
By the time he was released, the band's prized library of arrangements were lost and he elected to start again in California, forming a series of tight, bluesy combos featuring vocalists Crown Prince Waterford and Jimmy Witherspoon.
The latter's Ain't Nobody's Business (made with McShann) was a hit and launched the singer's national career.
