CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1992) + JINGLE ALL THE WAY - DVDs
Except Jingle All the Way is a sociological satire in the way that Leni Riefenstahl's films for Hitler were sociological satires--it's interesting solely because of what we bring to the conversation.
Jingle All the Way is surgical in its dissection of what's wrong with our cinema and how those ills reflect the sickness that festers in our society.
Jingle All the Way is insidious entertainment--the cynical would say that it's better read as a documentary--arriving on DVD just in time for the holidays.

The premise of Jingle All the Way is one of those ideas that shows just how far we, as a society, have regressed from the times when we were but Australopithecines running around the African plains, looking for animal carcasses to scavenge.
This sense of borrowing from other films is even more prevalent during Jingle All the Way's climax, when Arnold, dressed like Turbo Man, flies around with a jet pack on his back ala The Rocketeer.
Sadly though, where The Rocketeer was clever and funny, Jingle All the Way is recycled and rather unimaginative.

Jingle All the Way does not appear to be destined to become a classic holiday movie, but it has enough slapstick humor to satisfy younger viewers and there's something to be said for a movie that can take the quintessential action star and turn him into a comedic spectacle.

 Folly Bells
The closed shape can be like a modern jingle bell, with 'petals' of metal that are folded over to enclose the pea, or more like sleigh bells or morris bells, which are more spherical with an equitorial seam.
These are most like the medieval jingle-type bells extant, in that they have leaf or herringbone patterns on the 'petals' and they are cast in one form, as are many (but not all) of the medieval examples.
Although the very shiny modern jingle bell may have been the desired end-product for the medievals, my opinion is that the shininess will make it appear too modern when wearing it with garb, and I find the Indian bells to have a sweeter tone.

After an unfortunate moratorium, "Jingle All the Way" is once again available on DVD, now in a bright red plastic keepcase just in time to capitalize on California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's first Christmas in office.
Schwarzenegger's holiday film isn't exactly a "classic" in most eyes -- it was derided by critics at the time -- but it is one of the better "neglectful dad" films that proliferated in the '90s.
And while "Jingle All the Way" is utterly formulaic and often quite silly, Arnold and costar Sinbad give it just enough cartoonish, holiday charm to balance out the maudlin sentiment.

A jingle campaign today would be expensive and high risk because jingles require head-banging repetition, says Larry Londre, a professor at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication.
Schwartz is blunt about the jingle's cultural ignominy: ''It's sort of uncool to have a jingle.'' Today's consumers -- especially in the coveted 18-34 demographic -- didn't grow up with 40s and 50s crooners, who were the artistic ancestors of jingle writers, he says.
The experts all agree that despite their high cost and risk, jingles offer potential for great reward, which is exactly what could tempt an advertiser to bring one back.
