One of the earliest expressways nationwide was the Jingshi Expressway between Beijing and Shijiazhuang in Hebei province.
Expressways in China are, thankfully, signposted in both Simplified Chinese and English (except for parts of the Jingshi Expressway, which relies fully on Chinese characters).
Expressway construction has also been one of the rare instances in which the Communist Party of China and the State Council has had to back down on a major policy initiative.

Claimed as the first completed expressway in China (or at least in mainland China), the Jingshi expressway (or Jingshi freeway, as it was formerly known) links Beijing with Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei province, a city just slightly smaller than Tianjin.
The expressway, built in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, is one of the oldest, if not the oldest expressway, not only in Beijing, but possibly in the entire PRC as well.
The expressway that continues south after Shijiazhuang is termed the Shi'an Expressway, heading toward Anyang and eventually Zhengzhou in Henan province.
