Retired emperors are called Dajo Tenno or Joko.
There were Dajo Tenno and Dajo Hoo before and after the Heian period, however the Insei system usually refers to the governing system put in place by Emperor Shirakawa in 1086 during the Heian period.
There are indeed early examples of abicating emperors, such as Empress Jito, Emperor Shomu or Emperor Uda in the 7th, 8th and 9th centuries.

Dajo Tenno or Daijo Tenno (both 太上天皇) was a Japanese Emperor (Tenno) who abdicated in favor of a successor.
As defined in the Taiho Code, although retired, a Dajo Tenno could still exert power.
The first such exemple of Dajo Tenno is the Empress Jito in the 7th century.

In the case of the Tennos ("Emperors"), they often settled in monasteries, where they continued to exert influence over their successors from the privileged position of elder statesmen.
In official chronicles, Jimmu Tenno is said to have ruled circa 600 BCE, but this is only possible if his next ten or more successors lived the impossibly long life-spans they are credited with in the court histories.

The first Tenno are in large part legendary, as testified by there being only fourteen Tenno covering some eight-hundred years.
The next female emperor was Empress Jito, a daughter of Tenji who reigned after the death of her husband Emperor Temmu in 686.
She was not formally installed as emperor until 690, but even during the reign of Temmu (when she was known as Empress Uno), she had ruled jointly with him.

two prints in the book - Tenchi Tenno and his daughter
My previous explanation was getting a bit : lengthy, so I didn't mention the special case of the first : two prints in the book - Tenchi Tenno and his daughter : Jito Tenno.
These two prints are unlike most of the others : in the book in that the entire page is 'full', and not mostly : empty white space like the others.
