		TARGU JIU, Romania, July 14 (Reuters) - In 1904, a young carpenter, stone mason and flute player set out on foot from rural Romania to reach Paris and become one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century.
		The Jiu river flows by the leafy park, where a visitor can walk under the five-metre (16-foot) high Gate of the Kiss, through the Corridor of the Chairs to the Table of Silence -- an Arthurian-inspired round table surrounded by 12 stools.
		Brancusi donated the Targu Jiu complex to his country in 1937 but died in Paris 20 years later before he could complete his vision of a park filled with sculptures, banned from Romania by its communist dictators.

		Even today, Târgu Jiu is not easily accessible, and it is tempting to think that in 1937 its remoteness facilitated the erection of such an uncompromisingly hermetic monument, far from the conservative mindsets that inhibited commissions in larger centers.
		International Brancusi scholars at Târgu Jiu for a symposium in the spring of 2001 felt that the WMF made the right decision by carefully balancing conservation and restoration.
		It was commissioned in 1935 as a memorial to soldiers who had sacrificed their lives during a decisive battle on the Jiu river in World War I. After its dedication in 1938, it was officially donated to the Municipality of Târgu Jiu, which remains its legal owner.
