Having proclaimed independence from Portugal in 1822, Pedro I, son of Joo VI, was crowned Emperor of Brazil on December 1, 1822.
The Kings of Portugal then were the Monarchs in Brazil until Napoleon's invading army forced the Portuguese government to flee to Brazil in 1807.
Brazil was officially discovered on April 22, 1500 and based on the Treaty of Tordesilhas, it became a possession of Portugal.

 Pedro III of Portugal
Pedro married Maria in 1772, at which time she was the heir to the throne then held by his brother Jos I. They had six children, of whom the eldest surviving son succeeded Maria as Joo VI on her death in 1816.
Pedro III of Portugal (July 5 1717 - April 25 1786) became King Consort of Portugal on the succession of his wife and niece queen Maria I in 1777, and ruled with her until his death.
Pedro was the younger son of Dom João V and brother of Jos I.
