Jo (weapon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The martial art of wielding the jo is called jojutsu or jodo; aiki-jo is a set of techniques in aikido which uses the jo to illustrate aikido's principles with a weapon.
The techniques for jo were reportedly invented by Muso Gonnosuke after he was defeated by Miyamoto Musashi in a duel.
The usage of various stick weapons has existed in one form or another long before Muso Gonnosuke invented his techniques, but his school, Shinto Muso-ryu, was probably the first known professional school that dedicated itself to the art of using a jo against a swordsman.

As with any weapon, bearers would often find one best suited to their build, opting often for one that, while standing, can be swung down with full arm extension without hitting the ground, and for a diameter that fits the hand comfortably.
The weapon's name comes from the way it is commonly held: one hand at the center of the staff, and one hand halfway between the center and one end.
The jo itself has existed in one form or another long before Muso Gonnosuke invented his techniques, but his school was the first known professional school that dedicated itself to the art of using a jo against a swordsman.

Weapon Symetry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Aikido weapon study focuses primarily on the jo and boken (katana) - staff and sword.
This assymetry results in the sword being a weapon of many effective parts: the tip is used to puncture, the edge is used to cut, the back and sides of the blade can be used to block and sheild, the tsuba guards and catches, the handle can be used as a blunt end to pummel.
In contrast with the sword, the jo is versatile.

Within the movements of this weapon, Muso combined the tsuki or thrust of the spear, the utsu or strike of the sword and staff and the harai or sweep of the naginata.
Because of its shorter length, combat with the jo is characterized by its speed and high frequency of reversals of the weapon.
Originally a weapon of the warrior monks, by the twelfth century it was adopted by the warring Minamoto and Taira clans, where it became an early favorite with the bushi or classical warriors.

The Jo is usually 4 Shaku 2 Sun and 1 Bu in length, in Japanese measuring, that is equivalent to 1 meter 27 centimeters.
A weapon is simply an extension of the arms, thus the body remains the same as if unarmed with the difference that you have a weapon to your use.

The greatest aspect of the Jo is that all the moves of the four weapons mentioned earlier, apply equally well to the weapon.
Any one of these weapons techniques applied to the Jo would make an extremely effective fighting style, but the advantage of the wooden weapon is that all four can be used interchangeably, allowing for a versatility of application which makes predicting what movement will be next, impossible to achieve.
Always remember that a weapon is only as good as the person holding it, thus if you want to be able to use a Jo, as well as, all everyday weapons which conform to it's configuration, it is important to train hard.

And yet, the jo possesses many of the attributes of all three of these revered arms: the slashing stroke of the katana, the thrusting reach of the spear, and the reversible striking power and indestructibility of the bo.
The techniques of the jo which are taught in most aikido dojo are an amalgamation, not intended to represent any style or preserve a single combative tradition, but to illustrate the principles of aikido as they may be applied with a polearm.
Too, the student is schooled to regard the jo as an extension of his arms and body, and so he treats it not as a separate entity, but as an extension of the normal motion of his body.

The major differs between use of jo and bo in aikido are (at least what comes to my mind): - kamae: with jo you have your elbows contact with your body and the weapon is in front of you.
With bo the end of the weapon (or the fist that is at the end of the weapon) is on your hip, exactly where your put your hand when doing torifune.

Sticks and Stones Will Break Your Bones: A Look at Jo and Bo
This is on the assumption that, although the sword was the warrior's weapon of choice, he might not always have one available or he might face an enemy who was armed with a bo.
However, to really be effective with this weapon depends on the ability to keep moving, disrupting the opponent's maai, and using suki (momentary openings in the opponent's defense) to attack him with either the flail or the haft.
Because these are "real" weapons and very dangerous if used improperly, neither the staff nor the stick have a training method or competitive aspect where one uses protective equipment and engages in freestyle sparring with a mock weapon as in kendo and naginata.

Sticks and Stones Will Break Your Bones: A Look at Jo and Bo
Bo means "staff" and generally refers to a weapon about six shaku in length, or six feet, or thereabouts, and one sun in diameter.
Jo, meaning "stick" or "cudgel" are shorter weapons and do not have a standard length or diameter, as size depends on the particular ryu.
Both the bo and jo lack a cutting edge or sharpened point, so they are classified as impact weapons and derive their effect from the force delivered by accurately hitting or thrusting at a particular target.

The jo exercises are almost exact counterparts to the ken exercises, so that Shiho Mae with the jo differs very little from Shiho Mae with the ken, and so forth.
With the jo, though, all movements are more evasive, and with some additional margin, since the jo needs some room to be used powerfully, but the sword cuts severely even when not swung with great force.

Use of the jo is also a very good method of achieving co-ordination of body, limbs and mind, and to this end, many exercises have been developed using it.

If a weapon does not have a finish, do not sand the weapon further, as that will close the vascular openings in the weapon which absorb the oil, and will limit the depth to which your oil penetrates the weapon.
If you are willing to re-treat a weapon regularly, a plain oil treatment of tung, linseed (although I find linseed stinky and it will yellow your weapon), or mineral oil, cut with mineral spirits and/or citrus oils to increase absorption, will essentially keep your weapon a living thing, in some sense almost healing it's wounds.
