When Jo Anne McKinney's 4-month-old son was hospitalized for surgery to repair a problem with his lung, she expected to take him home in a matter of days.
But while Grant was in the hospital, doctors discovered that he had cystic fibrosis (CF), a disease that causes thick mucus to clog the respiratory and digestive systems.
Grant and Jo Anne created The Big Fun Foundation, a nonprofit group that creates Big Fun Boxes filled with toys and fun activities for kids who are in the hospital.

Jo Grant, full name Josephine Grant, is a fictional character played by Katy Manning in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who.
A junior civilian operative for UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), an international organisation that defends the Earth from alien threats, she was a companion of the Third Doctor and a regular in the programme from 1971 to 1973.
Jo was briefly mentioned in the serial Planet of the Spiders, when she sent a package back to UNIT from the Amazon.

Although Jo does spend the story screaming and getting knocked out (her hysterics at the end of episode one are dangerously funny) she still makes quite and impression, immediately she has more ability to surprise (her combat skills in the next story) and drive a story than Liz Shaw.
Whilst he was trapped on Earth Jo was his friend, his confidant, someone he could protect from the dangers that were thrown their way as a result he starts to depend upon their friendship and cannot bear to see anyone threaten to end it.
During the story it is obvious Jo is becoming closer and closer to Cliff and in a very revealing scene both the Doc and Cliff try to comfort her and it is Cliff she clings too, as a result he distracts Cliff from spending the evening with her.

Jo Grant seems to have been included for no other reason than the author is obviously fond of her (having used her in both of his Third Doctor MAs), which made it all the more annoying that she could have been anyone.
I understand that Jo had done a lot of growing up since leaving the Doctor (we get a quick summary when her character is introduced: she's now divorced and raising a child on her own) but most of the character development just didn't seem to work.
Genocide does not need Jo Grant in any way, shape or form and despite the tiny pang of nostalgia I felt when she was introduced I felt she was a huge waste of page space that could be spent furthering the plot.

The Brigadier, not sure what to do about her, handed her over to the Doctor despite her having failed her science exams, pointing out that all he really needed was someone to hand him his test tubes and tell him how wonderful he is.
