Jo Schlesser (born May 18, 1928 in Madagascar) was a Formula One driver from France.
Schlesser also participated in the 1966 and 1967 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, each time driving a Formula 2 Spec Matra-Cosworth.
A friend of Jo Schlesser's, future Formula One constuctor Guy Ligier always gave his cars type numbers beginning with 'JS' as a tribute to Schlesser.

Jo Schlesser's nephew, Jean-Louis was born in Nancy but grew up in Morocco where his father worked as an agricultural engineer.
Schlesser did some rallying and development work for racing car companies but it was not until 1978 that he made his mark in Formula 3, sharing the French national championship with Alain Prost.
In 1988 Williams asked him to stand in for the unwell Nigel Mansell at the Italian GP and he made his Grand Prix debut at the age of 40.

The nephew of sixties sportscar ace Jo Schlesser (whose initials 'JS' were adopted by Guy Ligier for all of his F1 designs) did rather well to follow in his uncle's footsteps.
Jo was tragically killed in the wet French Grand Prix of 1968 and Guy’s Ligier racecar designations always began with JS in his memory.

Jo Schlesser had a fatal accident on the third lap of the race, in the then-new Honda RA302 Chassis.
He was chosen when normal Honda driver John Surtees refused to drive the new car, opting for the older RA301 chassis, on the grounds that the new car was unsafe.

Ligier and Schlesser continued to race the two different Ford France Brabhams in 1965, but for Guy there was a distinct lack of success in the four Trophées de France events he entered, as well as in three non-championship races at Silverstone, Snetterton and Syracuse, mechanical retirements usually the order of the day.
Teaming up with Schlesser gave him confidence, and despite the odd mechanical failure and a few accidents, for example at Le Mans at the halfway stage, the pair claimed 6th at Monza, 4th at Mugello, 4th at Montlhery in a non-championship event, and a fine win in the Reims 12 hour race.
But then Schlesser finally got his big break when he was invited to drive the air-cooled Honda at the French GP at Rouen.

By the mid 1960s Guy Ligier, had already made a name for himself in his country as a well-connected and successful businessman in the construction industry, and as an accomplished sportsman, who had played rugby for his nation.
He continued Grand Prix racing for two troubled seasons, during which he was able to record a points finish, but also suffered a crash in practice at the NurbÜrgring, and when Schlesser was killed at the French Grand Prix temporarily withdrew from the sport.
By the time of the Schlesser tragedy, Ligier had commissioned his own sports racer, which was beginning to take shape, and although shelved briefly, it was revived when Renault designer Michel Tétu joined the concern.
