Jo was featured solo on several occasions, and the group backed up Frank Sinatra on many of his early numbers.
Her recordings during WWII were among the most popular with American servicemen, resulting in her being nicknamed ''G.I. Jo.'' In 1950 she moved from Capitol to CBS, where she continued her successful recording career until she returned to Capitol in 1961 for a six-album deal.

A clear-voiced singer with no touch of vibrato, Stafford was one of the most versatile vocalists of the forties.
Her cool voice was a key feature in the recordings of the Pied Pipers, while as Cinderella G. Stump she recorded the million selling parody of country music (and country accents), ‘Temptation’ or ‘Timtayshun’ as the song was billed on the label.
Stafford started as part of a family singing act, the 'Stafford Sisters'.

At just about that time Jo got all her masters back from Columbia, and also I became aware of the fact that copies of the old Jonathan and Darlene records were selling for 25 and 30 dollars, so instead of Gregorian chants we were in business initially with the Jonathan and Darlene records.

Jo’s voice has a startling purity which is able to convey emotion - particularly longing and pain - without employing distracting over-the-top ‘tricks".
The conductor for all of these sessions was Jo’s husband Paul Weston who was Capitol’s main music director and A & R man in the late 40s and early 50s.

Yes Indeed: Jo Stafford Irish & Celtic Music at An Irish Christmas.com
Although I understand those who appreciate the songs Ms Stafford made popular in the fifties, it is her singing of the great standards that I find immensely appealing - it is this combination that provides the reason this 4CD set is well worth the investment.
Jo was one of the best singers of her generation, and this box clearly demonstrates that.
The set covers Jo's entire period with Capitol, so it starts with a few songs featuring Jo as lead singer of the Pied Pipers doing typical big band stuff, but the remaining tracks all feature Jo as solo singer, with an occasional duet.

Honey-toned vocalist and former Pied Piper Jo Stafford illuminates a dozen Scottish folk and popular lyrics from the pen of 18th century Scots poet Robert Burns with scores by Alton Rinker and backed by her collaborator and husband, Paul Weston.
The palpably yearning sentiment in "John Anderson, My Jo" is the perfect vehicle for Stafford, as is "Comin' Through the Rye," one of only a handful of traditional melodies that Weston and Rinker astutely crafted to Stafford's rich tonality.
For inclined parties, it doesn't get better than Jo Stafford, and Songs of Scotland is evidence of her capacious talents and equally impressive interpretive skills.

In all cases he takes the harmony part blending beautifully with Jo’s gorgeous voice, coming forward occasionally to sing the straight melody.

If you've already got the boxed set (Yes indeed) covering Jo's music on Capitol and you've also got the best compilation of Jo's fifties music (Columbia hits collection), you'll have most but not all of the tracks here and on the other ASV collection.
If you haven't got any of Jo's music, buying the two ASV compilations will give you most of her hits including all the essentials.
Dedicated Jo Stafford fans may wish to buy all the compilations I've mentioned, together with the rarities collection (Jo Stafford on Capitol) just to have everything available - there are tracks on each that aren't available elsewhere - but it would involve a lot of duplication.

One of the most technically gifted and popular vocalists of the immediate post-war period, Jo Stafford effortlessly walked the line between breezy pop and the more serious art of post-big-band jazz singing.
With the help of her husband, top-flight arranger and Capitol A&R director Paul Weston, Stafford recorded throughout the '40s and '50s for Capitol and Columbia.
She also contributed (with Weston) to one of the best pop novelty acts of the period, a hilariously inept and off-key satire that saw the couple billed as Jonathan and Darlene Edwards.
