Through this album, Gilberto's wife Astrud became an international star, and the Jobim composition "The Girl from Ipanema" became a worldwide pop music standard for the ages.
João Gilberto's first recordings were released in Brazil as two-song 78-rpm EPs, between 1951 and 1959.

On her second release, Bebel Gilberto, daughter of legendary bossa nova master Jo?o Gilberto, takes a departure from her stylish "Tanto Tempo" from 2000.
If that fine recording captured bossa nova at the turn of the century, 50 years after her father midwifed the Brazilian sound, "Bebel Gilberto" adds more electronic pulses and layered production, obscuring the simplicity that makes bossa nova such beautiful music.
Still, this is a nice recording filled with Gilberto's dreamy vocals and, in the mix someplace, the guitar-based lilt of bossa nova.

Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Joandatilde;o Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd.
Gilberto in particular was a Stan Getz fan.
Getz, with his lyricism, the bittersweet longing in his sound, and his restrained but strong swing, was the perfect fit.

Os Mutantes, led by American-born singer/flautist Rita Lee, did not create this funhouse-mirror combo of West Coast-style soft pop, psychedelic freakouts and native rhythms in a vacuum: Their patrons (and often, songwriters) were Brazilian music legends Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Tom Ze, leaders of Brazil's politically-charged Tropicalism movement.
Os Mutantes are simply the most pop-oriented of the trio's many projects, most of which have, especially in recent years, been more in keeping with jazz and world music traditions.
Vocal arrangements on Os Mutantes tend to be lush and oddly pretty -- the liner notes namecheck the Swingle Singers, though both the Association and the Ray Conniff Singers come to mind as well.

Veloso skillfully uses each style to frame his calm, conversational vocals (which in turn owe a huge debt to the cool, suave delivery of his first idol, bossa nova legend, Jo o Gilberto).
