Joab (lit, "Jehovah is his father") was the nephew of King David, the son of Zeruiah in the Bible.
After David's death Joab supported the claim of Adonijah for the throne over that of Solomon (1 Kings 1:7; 2:28), and for this Solomon ordered his death by the hand of Benaiah (1 Kings 2:29-34), who then replaced him as commander of the army.
Joab was buried in 'the wilderness' (1 Kings 2:34).

Joab is normally a very straightforward guy, and is obviously embarrassed by David finding out that the message was from him (2 Samuel 14:22).
David, recognizing that Joab's commanding abilities were far superior, must have overlooked the killing because he kept Joab as commander-in-chief for the rest of his reign.
Joab certainly wasn't David's puppet, but they must have been able to work past their differences, because for the most part they worked well as a team, and were effective in killing many people and ruling over all Israel together.
