Joachim von Sandrart executed the drawing in a richly handled combination of chalk and wash, which evokes the range of textures of an oil painting, from the transparent layers of the woman’s toile collar to the varied textures of the produce.
Sandrart made this finished drawing after one of his own paintings, from a series of allegorical personifications of the months that Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria commissioned for the dining hall of his palace near Munich.
Sandrart then made a series of finished drawings to be used as models for a corresponding series of prints.

Sandrart, best known for his major art history published in 1675 under the title "Teutsche Academie" is one of the few artist-writers whose painterly oeuvre was on a par with his literary ambitions.
For Prince Maximilian of Bavaria, Sandrart painted allegories of day and night as well as a cycle of twelve paintings of the months of the year for the dining room of the Old Palace in Schleissheim.
The months, accompanied by verses, were widely distributed in the form of engravings.

Joachim von Sandrart produced engravings and paintings - mainly portraits, allegorical pieces and still lifes - but today he is better known for his writing on art theory.
Von Sandart's role as a painter is today far less significant than his scholarly contribution to the development of European culture.
Von Sandart's style was founded on conscious imitation and eclecticism and in the interest in unusual night lighting we can see the influence of his teacher, Gerrit van Honthorst.

 Biography
The first part is an introduction to the arts of architecture, painting, and sculpture put together largely from material taken from earlier sources such as Vasari and van Mander.
The second part, consisting of biographies of artists, likewise contains much material borrowed from previous writers but also much that is original, in particular about German artists (it was Sandrart who was the first to use the name Grünewald) and on contemporary artists that the author knew personally.
Sandrart was the first director (1662) of the Academy at Nuremberg (the earliest such in Germany).
