Backwater is more than a bit like Squashed (a girl with a dead mother and a father who doesn't understand her has a relative who understands how she feels), only with a more predictable story, and not as many funny and memorable moments.

This led me to believe that Joan Bauer had written a book on par with the very best of YA fiction; unfortunately, what I instead discovered is that a wonderfully told story is no longer the standard by which these books are judged.
Instead, awards are given to books that are thought to teach some valuable moral lesson; moreover, that lesson must be within the earnest guidelines of current (for it is ever-changing) political correctness.
Joan Bauer describes it perfectly and in an exciting way that I've never thought about before.

As in Bauer's Rules of the Road, the central story is of a journey: Ivy hikes into the wilds of the Adirondacks to find her reclusive aunt Jo-and to find her own destiny as well.
In fact, the book could have used less preaching and more story overall, but Ivy is such a darned fine gal that readers will be glad to make her acquaintance.
