Joan Chen or Chong Chen was born in 1961 in Shanghai, China.
Joan changed her name from Chong to Joan in honor of "Joan of Arc", who was a symbol of strength, willing to give up her life for what she believed.
Joan began acting at the age of fourteen, without her parents' consent, for she was the daughter and granddaughter of medical doctors and they wanted her to follow in her family's footsteps.

Joan Chen tells about the blind date that led to marriage, the problems of playing an 80-year-old peasant..
Ironically, at a time when Joan Chen is becoming comfortably esconced in the role of an American movie star and the wife of a successful capitalist doctor 13 years after abandoning stardom in China, she looks strikingly like the idealized young peasant woman of old communist posters, healthy and clear-skinned.
Chen brings her visitor a glass of water and makes a largely ineffectual effort to slide a pile of art and photo books out of the way on the oval glass coffee table of her living room.

 SPLICEDwire: Joan Chen feature (1999)
Joan Chen doesn't look like a rebel this afternoon, what with her perfectly pressed, couture-quality, chiffon dress and the length of her flapper-style bob brushing a soft, spa-toned cheek.
This "sent down" policy, as it was known by the population it effected (mostly educated middle class Chinese who weren't connected enough to get strings pulled for their children), saw thousands of kids leave home, many never to return again after they were stranded by this government directive which had by then outlived its usefulness.
Chen and Yan, who became friends when Yan was writing Chen's biography, both grew up in this era and saw many friends dispatched to remote regions by this policy.

Chen, now 38, was born into the heart of the Cultural Revolution, and while she was never "sent down" herself, she remembers "every other child" from her Shanghai neighborhood meeting Xiu Xiu’s fate.
It was never Chen’s plan to shoot without authorization, but months of trying to cooperate with the Chinese government left her with no other options.
But Chen takes solace in the fact that, as her heroine finally does, she has learned to stick to her ideals regardless of cost.

Interview: Joan Chen - actress and director - Interview
Joan Chen then built a substantial Hollywood acting career, establishing herself in the West as the opium-inhaling Empress of China in Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987), a mill owner in David Lynch's offbeat TV series, Twin Peaks (1990), and a Vietnamese peasant in Oliver Stone's Heaven and Earth (1993).
Last year, Chen directed her first feature, Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl, about the brutal send-down system of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, in which the government attempted to homogenize society by exiling educated citizens to the rural provinces to perform manual labor.
Chen cowrote the screenplay, put together $1 million--much of it her own--and, after the script was rejected by China's film bureau in Beijing, got a cast and crew and shot the film on the run in the western provinces.

The social constraints imposed by the revolutionary heroine roles began to chafe, and as she neared the end of her teen years, Chen was desperate to escape.
A year later Joan Chen obtained permission to leave China to study filmmaking in the U.S.      Within months China's most popular actress found herself waitressing in a San Fernando Valley Chinese restaurant while attending Cal State Northridge.
