The Solution to Joan Lindsay's Novel "Picnic at Hanging Rock"
Because the novel is a work of fiction, Lindsay can be as descriptive or as vague as she wishes, and she uses this to her advantage in telling the story.
If Lindsay knew happened to the girls, however, the novel cannot be an unsolved mystery, unless of course it is a work of fiction, which confirms assumption one.
Lindsay seems to be telling the reader that the wallaby knows what happened to the girls, which makes sense if it was the same wallaby from the previous quotation.

Yet Joan lived to witness the ridiculing of Lindsay by some critics as a prude, whose alleged fear of sexually challenging females is manifested by the voluptuous, Amazonian women who flaunt themselves across his canvases.

Joan Lindsay, the author of the book from which Cliff Green wrote the screenplay adaptation, closely guarded any would-be secret clues as to the story's truth, only occasionally offering tidbits which may have been clues, or merely red herrings.
What this all illustrates of course is that 'solving' the mystery is hardly the point, and that the film's success and uniqueness rests largely on the fact that it is all so mysterious and dreamlike, as the quote from Edgar Allen Poe that begins the film reveals.
The picture quality (it is presented at 1.33, as are all the extras) is variable, and the print is quite speckled - but it is valuable to have interviews with cast members not featured in the longer documentary.

In Joan Lindsay's 1967 novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Mrs Appleyard's scaling of Hanging Rock is depicted as the actions of a rageful and frustrated woman who with a shaking fist and an insane glint in her eye, attempts to take on Hanging Rock itself.
The story of the rediscovery of these images is centered on an Australian named David Critchley who in 1997 set about compiling a "special edition" of Joan Lindsay's novel--the proceeds of which would benefit the Hanging Rock Reserve.
Published in 2002, the end-result of Critchley's labour-of-love is, according to Michelle Griffen of the Melbourne newspaper The Age, "a gorgeous coffee-table book of the original Picnic at Hanging Rock novel, interlaced with excerpts from Cliff Green's screenplay and illustrated with hundreds of never-before-seen images."
