Joan Sims was born Irene Joan Marion Sims on 9 May 1930, the daughter of an Essex railway station master.
Joan never married, not, she says because she doesn't want to, but simply because the right person never came along (Kenneth Williams once proposed to her, but with Kenny, you never could tell whether he was being serious or not!).
Sims admits she leans on others for support, and was absolutely devastated when her mother, Hattie Jacques and her manager Peter Eade, all died within a few years of each other.

After graduating from RADA in 1950, Joan Sims made her first appearance as Nurse Rigor Mortis in Doctor in the House In 1958 she began her recurring roles in 24 Carry On films, starting with Carry On Nurse and ending with Carry On Emmannuelle in 1978.
In 1986 Sims appeared in the long running BBC science fiction series Doctor Who serial The Trial of a Time Lord: The Mysterious Planet in the part of Katryca.
Joan Sims slipped into a coma due to ill health brought on by years of heavy drinking and died on June 28, 2001.
