  João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Figueiredo was elected president of Brazil and took the oath of office on March 15, 1979, serving until March 15, 1985.
Figueiredo was against this desire and in 1984 the Congress rejected the return of direct elections.
João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo was the son of General Euclides de Oliveira Figueiredo, who was exiled after an attempt to topple a dictatorship in 1932.

During Figueiredo's mandate, which lasted from 1979 to 1985, Brazil went into a deep recession and won the title of country with the largest foreign debt.
His father, Euclides de Oliveira Figueiredo, was the troops commander during the 1932 Revolução Constitucionalista, the failed São Paulo state insurrection against the Getúlio Vargas provisional government.
It was Figueiredo who signed August 28, 1979, the Lei da Anistia (Amnesty Law), which reopened Brazil's door to thousands of Brazilians who had lost their political rights and had been jailed, banned and exiled.
