Joaquim Cruz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joaquim Carvalho Cruz (born March 12, 1963) is a former Brazilian athlete, winner of the 800 m at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Cruz was born in Taguatinga, near Brasília, as the son of a steel worker.
Due to a cold, Cruz did not start in the semi-finals of the Olympic 1500 m, which caused quite a stir among the Brazilians, who thought he didn't want to represent his country in an event in which his chances of winning were smaller.

Following a victory in the 800m at the 1983 USA National Collegiate Championships in Houston on 3 June, Cruz embarked on a quite successful season in Europe, where he achieved victories at Oslo on 9 July in a new personal best of 1min 44.03sec, and at Nice on 18 July in 1min 44.32sec.
Cruz surrendered the lead at the bell, but stayed in contention, briefly regaining the lead approaching the home straight, before fading to a third place finish in 1min 44.27sec.

But on the crucial third segment, Coe took control and was timed at 75 seconds for 600 metres - Cruz's comparable times were 49.41 and 75.9, while Kipketer in Rieti ran 49.7 behind a 49.05 pace but went through 600 metres in 76.1 having believed that the record was beyond his grasp.
