On a seasonally adjusted basis, 5,900 jobs were lost in the private sector and a 6,400 job loss was attributable to declines in government payrolls.
Year-over-year comparisons of monthly job losses since October 2001 show that the decline in New York City jobs is three times as great, percentage-wise, than it is in the nation, as shown in Chart A. The number of jobs located in New York City in October was down 1.2 percent from September 2001.
As discussed earlier, the City's overall loss of 12,300 jobs in October is the net of a 6,400-job loss in government jobs and a 5,900-job loss in the private sector.

Home News Tribune | Jersey jobs to surpass prerecession peak   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
By October, employment in New Jersey had rebounded to within 5,300 jobs of the December 2000 peak of 4.03 million jobs, Nancy H. Mantell, director of the Rutgers Economic Advisory Service, said yesterday.
Despite that pronouncement from economists, the country continued to lose jobs until July 2003 and is still 1.7 percent below the national employment peak of 132.5 million jobs, reached in March 2001, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Mantell now expects job expansion in the Garden State will be fueled by the four service "supersectors." The professional/business services sector will lead the way in job growth, followed by education/health care, leisure/hospitality and "other services," she said.

 Jobs Picture -- February 4, 2005
As of last month, payroll levels have finally surpassed their pre-recession peak.  In February 2001—the month before the recession was declared to have begun—payrolls stood at 132,546,000.  Thanks in part to revisions which added 161,000 to the December job count, payrolls stood at 132,573,000 last month, 27,000 jobs above the last peak.
Though some job-market watchers have crowed about the recent pace of job growth—the president noted in his State of the Union address that “in the last year alone, the United States has added 2.3 million new jobs”—this is well below the historical pace of job growth at this stage of a recovery.
Using the employment peak of February 2001 would mean it took 47 months to regain the jobs lost.
