Jocelyn Pook graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1983 where she studied the viola.
Jocelyn's early compositions were scores for theatre and dance companies, such as DV8 Physical Theatre and Pete Brook's Insomniac, and in 1994 Jocelyn wrote the music for Deluge, commissioned by the Canadian dance company O Vertigo Danse.
Jocelyn Pook co-founded Electra Strings, who now have a busy schedule undertaking recording sessions and tours of their own music as well as working regularly for TV and film.

Pook, a British composer most often described as "avant-garde," is best known right now for music that appears in Kubrick's movie "Eyes Wide Shut," but it was the music from her original album, "Deluge," that caught Kubrick's attention in the first place.
Pook says of this album, "The main ideas...were born out of linking up the two millenia - the year 1000 and the year 2000 - by means of myth, legends and fears about the end of the world.
Pook uses the keyboard under the voices of the singers in a way that reminds me of bagpipes.

Pook is a self-taught composer who followed her studies in viola at the Guildhall with three years of touring with the Communards.
Pook continues to write and to perform, both with the Electra Strings and in the group 3 or 4 Composers, who last year presented the stunning music-theatre piece Still Ringing.

This happy accident has brought Pook's music to more people than would have heard it otherwise --- I know I would have been unlikely to encounter this CD had it not been for her sudden catapult to fame.

And, while several of the pieces used here are lush, orchestral numbers (such as the one by Pook used during the orgy), those that create the strongest impression are the simple, discordant ones designed for the piano (credited to composer György Ligeti).
As John Carpenter proved in Halloween, complexity is not always necessary to set the proper mood (and, strange as it may seem, elements of this score reminded me of Halloween's).
