It is with sorrow that we announce the death of Jochen Liedtke.
Jochen's first operating system was a by-product; a run time environment for ELAN was needed on small Z80 micro computers.
Jochen is survived by his wife Adelheid with whom he lived together in harmony.

The author, Jochen Liedtke, demonstrates that microkernels are neither inherently inefficient nor inherently inflexible.
In Liedtke's mind, no one is using microkernels because no one can build them well (or, at least as well as he can).
Liedtke is arguing that this is exactly the wrong model for microkernels.

The hitserver is an example where this perception is not rubbish (as you phrased it).
The same is not true for the performance aspects and my feeling is that "all these important security features" are used to fatten and to slow the kernel unreasonably.
