Sturges is drawn to girls and young women because the awkward perfection of adolescence is the most temporary state of all.
The presence of the artificial is startling enough in Sturges' work; the photograph is the most playful and blatant metaphor for his work as an attempt to preserve his subjects in a pristine state.
Sturges' gift -- and the thing that makes him seem so dangerous to some -- is that he acknowledges that, and has removed lasciviousness from his gaze.

Given the controversy that swirls around the work of Jock Sturges, it might seem that I'm making a snide joke by juxtaposing his remark with one from literature's most famous pedophile, Humbert Humbert.

Sturges makes most of his pictures in France,(and some in the rural 'hippie' communes of Northern California) and, as was pointed out in the play 'My Fair Lady' the French don't care what they do, as long as they pronounce it properly.
Academic or metaphysical interpretations of Sturges are not wrong, but unnecessary; naked bodies, sunlight and a beach are about as elemental as things get, and it is this bareness we find startling and interesting and full of sensual appeal, whether male or female.
How lucky we are that a photographer of Sturges' abilities has the courage and the visual skill to document a world delightfully removed from, yet still a part of, the permanently clothed world in which most of us have chosen to live.
