Jodhi May: The reluctant celebrity - Independent Online Edition > Profiles
May was quietly wonderful as the dutiful Lizzie, and the reviews her performance garnered were almost universally positive.
Jodhi May was just 11 years old when her life suddenly took its unexpected course.
May was duly chosen, and spent three months on set in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (it was forbidden, in 1987, to film in South Africa), perfecting her new craft as well as a highly convincing Afrikaans accent.

Scotland on Sunday - Spectrum - The private life of Jodhi May
On the other hand, maybe I’ve just been interviewing Jodhi May. Nothing personal, but when an actress says she is "bemused" at a question because it asks her about her childhood instead of (yet again) about Chekhov and her role in The Seagull, I can’t help feeling that it’s time for a snooze.
Comfort-zone territory for Jodhi May is the "incredibly rewarding" process of rehearsing and the "extraordinary experience" of working with director Peter Stein and how "incredibly lucky" she is to be doing good creative work.
Having read the few available cuttings on May, where a broadsheet interviewer asks her which part of London she comes from and she replies that it is "one of those things you like to keep to yourself", I know what to expect and invest lots of time in Chekhov.

Anna (Jodhi May), a meek, pretty twenty-year-old stenographer, accepts a job to transcribe the work-in-progress of the great Dostoyevsky (Michael Gambon).
In contrast, Jodhi May's Anna, as she slowly becomes immersed in the man and his novel, is really the film's anchor.
May has a wide-eyed innocence, and she gives a genuinely natural performance that I found more compelling that that of Gambon.

A naive, young governess (May) is hired by a charming bachelor (Firth) to look after his two young children in a grand mansion in rural England.
And most surprisingly, the very talented Jodhi May who should have been perfect for this role is somehow simultaneously grim and blank from the beginning; she gives us little insight into her character.

It achieves this effect, thanks to the illicit pair's halting, confessional arias and Jodhi May's poignant performance as Una, the girl who falls for Roger Allam's northern loser Ray and erupts into his life 16 years later.
Robert Hanks of The Independent: "The two actors, Jodhi May and Roger Allam, are both assured and disconcertingly changeable--to begin with, she oozes sexual confidence and righteous indignation, while he is all constraint and anxiety.
May gathers up her coat to leave once or twice too often and while a late-arriving plot-twist confirms that Harrower isn't trying to replace the audience's easy certainties with certainties of his own, it also feels slightly effortful."
