  divastation: jody watley
born on january 30, 1960, jody watley made regular visits to saturday afternoon living rooms across america when, as a teenager, she was a featured dancer on the country's premiere dance program, soul train.
in fact, watley was in such demand that mca saw fit to release an album of her hits, remixed for the dancefloor, entitled do you wanna dance with me?.
jody's next album, affairs of the heart, departed greatly from the dance diva persona which had become firmly ingrained in the mind of music fans across the globe.

Her debut solo album, Jody Watley (1987), sold a million copies and produced three Top Ten hits -- "Looking for a New Love," "Don't You Want Me," and "Some Kind of Lover." As a result of its success, Watley won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1987.
Her second album, Larger than Life (1989), went gold and contained the number two pop hit "Real Love" as well as the Top Tens "Friends" and "Everything." You Wanna Dance with Me?, released at the end of that year, contained dance remixes of her hits.
Watley's third album, Affairs of the Heart, was released at the end of 1991; Flower followed in 1998.

 Jody Watley
For the year, Watley was almost as popular with the MTV/teen audience as Janet Jackson and Madonna: she scored major #1 hits on the pop, R&B, and dance charts and produced songs that are, in retrospect, some of the most memorable dance hits of the decade.
Jody's second album, ''Larger Than Life'', released in 1989, solidified her as a pop icon in the music industry.
The album did score the smash singles "I'm The One You Need", the #4 hit "I Want You", and the ballad "It All Begins With You", which she was invited by President George Bush in 1991 to perfom at the White House.

Amazon.com: Reviews for Flower: Music: Jody Watley   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Flower was the album that saw Jody Watley return to a major record label after her entrepreneurial venture (on her Avitone label) with her previous "Affection" album.
watley's lyrics are mature and sophisticated in a way that very few of today's artists are; what's more, because of her years in the industry, they are more easily believed coming from her than they would be from the mouth of...say...monica, brandy, nicole, aaliyah, etc..
Jody really put her heart into this album, the way it is pruduced and sung is a treat to all of her fans.

Jody Watley - Jody Watley - Song Listings
Of all her albums, her debut was the most successful (and the most dance-oriented), and produced some of the most memorable dance hits of the decade.
Also on this set is the stunning second single, "Still a Thrill," which wasn't a big pop hit, but featured Watley singing in her lower register, and ranks as one of the funkiest and oddest dance tunes of its time.
This album clearly ranks among the artist's best, but if one desires the hit versions of most the singles, then one would be better off with Greatest Hits.

Jody Watley's "Midnight Lounge" is a standout in a year full of radio freindly wanna be divas.
Jody may not have the pipes of Celine Dion and other belters (thank God as I am a little tired of all the Mariah/Whitney wannabees), but in my opinion music is not about hitting high notes to prove who knows what, but can based on the sum of the parts.
Jody has released a record that is concurrently very now (even though most of it was recorded in 1999) while her soothing voice is instantly recognizable.

Jody's teenage gig as a dancer on Soul Train would lead to a meeting with the hit TV show's booking agent, Dick Griffey.
A year later Destiny's Child put the Watley-penned "Sweet Sixteen" on their multi-platinum album The Writing's on the Wall while Watley herself was working on a new dance sound that was slightly more left-field but still stylish and tasteful.
In 2005, she appeared on King Britt's album This Is and climbed back on top of the dance charts with a new remix of her classic "Looking for a New Love." The following year, Watley released a cover of Madonna's "Boderline" as a single.

GIANT STEP™ | Feature - Jody Watley The Makeover (Avitone Recordings)
Refusing to go out like the bubble gum music of the late 80's, Jody Watley is holding down her spot as a multi-dimensional artist, which includes roles as a singer, producer and songwriter.
She is deepening her love for music with ninth album, 'The Makeover,' which takes notable classics by artists such as Madonna, Bob Marley and Diana Ross, and transforms them into her own signature style with a little help from some talented friends.
Various vibes are presented on the album such as the springtime feel on the chill out title track, the sweet feminine sultriness displayed on "Waiting in Vein" (dope, dope mix by Ron Trent) and the slowed down pace of "Borderline," which presents the song with more emotion than the original.
