Joe Baiza | View the Music Artists Biography Online | VH1.com
Joe Baiza is truly one of the great guitarists to come out of the so-called punk rock scene of southern California, "so-called" because most of Baiza's music fits more into the catagory of free jazz or jazz rock.
Baiza's career also includes a trail of unfortunate incidents including accidents and several horribly violent attacks on his person; indeed, with a little bit of Hollywood seasoning and rewriting there is the stuff of a Steven Seagal action picture in there somewhere.
Baiza was involved in a variety of different groups in the 90's and beyond, extending the developments of Universal Congress Of with the aforementioned Melocodiacs and embarking on at least three marathon tours with Watt, in whose band he replaced guitarist Nels Cline.

As a frontwoman, Weba Garretson is a powerhouse, her intoxicatingly smooth vocals lending a touch of class to Baiza's angular fretwork.
Garretson is an intriguing yet charismatic singer and performer, superbly complemented by the dizzying accompaniment of guitarist Joe Baiza (founder of the seminal SST band Saccharine Trust and the infamous punk/jazz quartet Universal Congress Of), drummer Wayne Griffin of Congress Of and bass player Ralph Gorodetsky, a veteran of both UCO and the Sinfonietta...
It doesn't become apparent, however, until the sharp, stabbing shards of Joe Baiza's electric guitar poke through the calm with such lightning speed and deadly force that they shove the ambience of the endeavor into an entirely different orbit.

Pitched somehwewe between the elastic funk of the meters and Ornette Coleman's lyrical take on free jazz, the plot complicated further by Baiza's cool post-Mose Allison blues vocals and raps, Universal Congress Of is a one of a kind rock band, the unlikely but completely convincing outcome of Joes Baiza's singular musical odyssey.
In '84 and '85 Baiza punched the clock with both the Trust ant the October Faction, the laker a white hot jamming band where Joe duelled with Black Flags lead guitaist Greg Ginn.
Three albums, Joe Baize and Universal Congress of, Prosperous and Qualified and This is Mecolodics were issued at the tail end of the '80s.

Not all of the boundary-pushing that Saccharine Trust did was good (in fact, some of it is downright awful), but when they kept their tendency toward grandiose self-indulgence in check, they were a pretty formidable proposition, especially live, and recorded at least one indispensable record, 1986's We Became Snakes.
Formed in the early '80s by Joaquin (aka Jack) Brewer and guitarist Joe Baiza, Saccharine Trust metamorphosed from a dissonant, noisy, anti-rock quartet into a more sophisticated, but still jagged and noisy rock-jazz band.
Joe Baiza formed the fine, funky, and exciting Universal Congress Of.

After breaking up in the '90s, cryptic and confrontational singer Jack Brewer and brilliant axeman Joe Baiza re-formed the band in '96 with a new rhythm section featuring Brian Christophers on skins and Chris Stein on bass.
It's a radically artsy fusion (Baiza calls it "poetry music" or "mini-theater") that actually helped establish the modern, international punkified jazz and improvisational noise traditions that such Bay Area heavies as Total Shutdown and the Flying Luttenbachers presently honor.
"I think Joe Baiza is one of the greatest guitar players ever, and Jack Brewer is a serious poet," says Oakland musician Damon Smith, an accomplished double bassist who has jammed with a long list of sonic mavericks from Cecil Taylor to Elliott Sharp to John Tchicai to Baiza and Brewer themselves.

TrouserPress.com :: Joe Baiza & the Universal Congress Of
The luxuriantly post-bop vocabulary of the five-song This Is Mecolodics' lengthy, tongue-in-cheek liner essay doesn't, ultimately, go very far towards explaining just what the term (the use of which Baiza is nominally serious about) means.
Baiza's as hell-bent on improv as ever: garroting his axe Sonny Sharrock-style on the virulent "Joey," softening the tone and lending a mariachi feel to Ornette Coleman's "Law Years," even sitting out a round as Steve Moss and Jacob Kuhn tussle in the steel cage sax matchup "Ni¤os de la Tierra."
Baiza, however, downplays his guitar work (probably a bad idea) and sings on a number of tracks — definitely a bad idea, aside from "Uh-Huh," an oddball Donald Fagen soundalike.

In June of 1996 I got a phone call from someone telling me that Joe Baiza after a Mecolodiacs gig in Germany had been jumped by a bunch of literal 'Neo-Nazis.' He was beaten so badly, and his hand so badly fractured there was some doubt he would be able to play again.
I was asked if Vida would be interested in performing a benefit to help him pay for his medical bills, as well as possible surgery to repair the damge in his hand.
I thought it would be cool if Vida actually performed some of Joe's tunes, and asked Saccharine Trust singer and poet (lyricist if you insist) Jack Brewer if he would do the singing.

Recorded on a 1996 German tour, this live album features probably the best-balanced lineup of the Los Angeles quartet, with Steve Gaeta and Paul Lines forming the rhythm section behind Joe Baiza and Steve Moss.
Baiza shines on the jazz-slanted, reflective "Uh Huh" and the should-be-a-generational-anthem "Marginal," with its War -like funk groove.
Moss steps up front to trade singing and harmonica on the closer, "Mudman Blues," a straight blues change of pace.

This L.A.-bred combo quickly shed its hardcore skin to drape itself in some of the most experimental sounds of the early '80s.
Although lineup changes were plentiful, core members Joaquin Brewer (vocals) and Joe Baiza (guitar) poked and prodded their songs into unique shapes suffused with free-jazz and stylin' syncopated rhythms, all captured deftly on this Mike Watt-produced set.
Baiza matches him emote for emote, coaxing some decidedly brimstone-fueled solos from his axe that mesh perfectly with Steve Moss's sax on bracing cuts like "Longing for Ether" and "The Redeemer." Sharp, smart, and more than a little scary.
