Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in Queens, Budden came of age across the Hudson River in Jersey City, which he proudly continued to rep in his rhymes despite its somewhat unsavory reputation relative to more traditional hip-hop breeding grounds like Harlem, Brooklyn, the South Bronx, and Queensbridge.
While all of this was going down, industry heavyweight Def Jam signed Budden and prepared his self-titled debut album, which charted well its opening week, earned some critical support, and foreshadowed a bright future for the refreshingly unique rapper.

The opening is pure rap/hip-hop gold -- gone is the stark seriousness of modern times and in its place is a good-time shout-out festival to the pioneers of hip-hop that harks back to an era when bling-bling didn't matter but good times did.
Budden doesn't mince words or spout out the normal East Coast rap clichés; his delivery is sincere, especially when dealing with the internal day-to-day conflicts of living in Jersey City.
The heaviest moment in the entire album resides in "Walk With Me," a brutally honest confessional of his life on the streets, his past problems with substance abuse, and his uncomfortable transition from being just another rapper to a rapper signed to a contract with a major label.

Rolling Stone : Joe Budden : Review
Joe Budden's rhymes have two things many round-the-way rappers could use: wit and pathos.
On "Ma Ma Ma," he impresses a new friend by getting her into a club for free, telling her, "Now you ain't gotta pretend that you like the promoter." Even better are the songs where Budden excavates his past: The vivid "Calm Down" recalls how drugs ravaged his family.
And on "10 Mins" -- which lasts just that long -- Budden spits free verse about battling his demons in a display of psychic uncertainty most rappers (or artists of any stripe) couldn't even fathom.
