Comartin, a 54 year old lawyer, declared his candidacy in a news conference at his family farm in Stoney Point, Ont. He represents the Windsor-St. Clair riding in the House of Commons.
Comartin becomes the sixth candidate in the race to replace Alexa McDonough as party leader.
Comartin was elected to Parliament in the 2000 federal election.

A labour lawyer for the Canadian Auto Workers in Windsor, Ontario, Comartin enjoyed strong support from union members when he ran for a seat in the House of Commons, but narrowly lost in the 1997 general election and in a 1999 by-election.
He won the seat in the 2000 election, becoming the first NDP Member of Parliament (MP) elected from Ontario in seven years.
