 Joe Dante's American apocalypse
In the jargon of Canadian literary critic Northrop Frye, Joe Dante is a low-norm satirist.
Invaluable as a tool for satire, montage is also Dante's preferred formal procedure for producing what most modern filmmakers try to produce through its opposite, duration: the experience of the Sublime, which is consciousness of self raised to an apocalyptic pitch.
The dream that followed, in the film Dante was never given time to find in the editing room because Paramount wanted it in theatres before Ron Howard's Cocoon (US 1985), would have linked all the characters through their dream life as part of a whole analogous to Teilhard de Chardin's "noosphere" or World Mind.

 Joe Dante
Date of Birth: November 28, 1946 A self-proclaimed lifelong movie fanatic, Joe Dante began his career in film as a teenager by writing articles for Castle of Frankenstein, a fanzine for horror film addicts.
It was Dante's first experience with 35mm prints, but he quickly learned the process while on the job.
Along with co-director Allan Arkush, Dante made Hollywood Boulevard (1976), a humorous film about the fictitious small time film company Miracle Pictures, whose motto is "If it's a good picture, it's a Miracle." Dante went on to direct two horror films, Piranha (1978) and The Howling (1981).

Joe Dante   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
Dante originally wanted to be a cartoonist and went to art school to pursue his ambition, but eventually he switched to film.
Dante was unhappy with the experience and when the film was released, it was an undeserved financial failure and was dismissed by many critics.
Dante consciously made the film to appeal to a broader audience, and although the satire seems subdued, the film is still enormous fun and one of Dante's most all-round entertaining films.

DANTE: There is a horror comic quality to the images, which was done in part to get around the limited budget (you can have three zombies for this scene, but two can only have makeup on one side of their faces).

In 1990, Dante directed a sequel, which concentrated more on comedy than fright, but it's the original Gremlins that stays in moviegoers' minds.
This comic Joe Dante effort is set in a Norman Rockwell-esque small town at Christmastime.
Like most of Joe Dante's works, Gremlins is chock-full of significant cameo appearances: in this instance, such pop-culture icons as Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph, Chuck Jones, Scott Brady, Harry Carey Jr., Steven Spielberg (the film's executive producer) and even Robby the Robot all show up briefly on screen.

village voice > film > Homecoming by Dennis Lim
At once galvanic and cathartic, Dante's film uncorks the rage that despondent progressives promptly suppressed after last year's election and that has only recently been allowed to color mainstream coverage of presidential untruths and debacles.
Dante, the Roger Corman protégé who went on to direct Innerspace and both Gremlins movies, has been known to embed wayward subversions in Hollywood genre pieces (he also previously attempted an all-out political satire in the 1997 HBO movie The Second Civil War, just out on DVD).
Dante and writer Sam Hamm (Batman) adapted Homecoming from Dale Bailey's "Death and Suffrage," a 2002 short story that puts a morbidly literal spin on the idea of the dead being used to pad the Chicago voting roll.

Cast Commentary (feature length): Joe Dante talks the most and on the upside, what he says is interesting but on the downside, I wanted to hear more from the actors.
With the commentary on, you'll hear Joe Dante explain why the scenes were there and why they were cut out, Zach Galligan keeps re-integrating how he doesn't remember shooting the scenes in question and Phoebe Cates just doesn't seem like she wants to talk.

24fps | Under the Mushroom Cloud: American Fear in Joe Dante's Matinee
Dante treats the kids much more seriously than their well-intentioned but clueless parents, where Dante satirizes both political sides equally.
Sandra's parents attend the screening of Mant precisely because it is their right to do so, and when her father launches into a tirade against censorship Sandra simply says "I know" with the perfect note of bemused petulance of a child who knows her parents better than they know her.
Dante slips in such apocalyptic jokes as Sherry listening to "It's the End of the World" and movie posters trailing end-of-the-world epics Panic in Year Zero and The Day the Earth Caught Fire.

Dante would have you believe that Homecoming is a political satire under the guise of a horror film.
Dante’s political vision may have clouded his judgment and in times of war that might be overlooked, but his failure as a filmmaker in allowing a dull, pointless, humorous and grotesquely ridiculous feature out into the world is purely unforgivable.

Two of producer Roger Corman's editors at the time, Allan Arkush and Joe Dante, were keen to make the jump to film directing and this was their big chance.
As an indication of how tiny the budget was, Arkush and Dante had obviously resorted to driving around and shooting the city; there's at least a couple of minutes where Candy and company get lost on the way to the drive-in and we get travelogue footage instead.
But it becomes clear there is a killer on the loose when Mary is almost killed in an explosion while performing in a stunt, and the film turns serious, with a graphic murder of one character that seems out of place compared to the previous fun-filled frolics.

Joe Dante, the director of "Gremlins," and later "Small Soldiers" and "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," blames the backlash on the early trailers.
Dante says the spots also were deliberately "imitating the color and style of the 'E.T.' ads" from two years earlier, hoping to draw people in based on Spielberg's producer credit.

The films of director Joe Dante, including Gremlins (1984), Explorers (1985) and Innerspace (1987), frequently contain outrageous visual sequences and moments of irreverent humour that evoke the spirit of the classic Looney Tunes cartoons.
Dante therefore seems like the ideal person to resurrect the Looney Tunes characters for the 21st century, and make up for the previous disappointing Looney Tunes animation/live action hybrid Space Jam (1996).
