Joe DeRita, sometimes known as "Curly Joe DeRita," was the last of the six members of the Three Stooges to join that august comedic trio.
In October of 1958, Joe DeRita -- christened "Curly Joe" because of his resemblance to the group's most famous member, Curly Howard -- made his debut as a member of the trio.
Such was his relationship with Howard that the oldest surviving Stooge, who controlled the group's name, broke precedent and gave DeRita permission to put together a new, very short-lived group of Three Stooges.

Unfortunately, Joe DR cancelled out at the last minute due to health reasons, so as far as I know they never did meet.

 Was Joe DeRita better solo?
I've never seen any DeRita solo shorts, but as long as his comic persona was different from the annoying one he used as a Stooge ("Buddy boy!"), maybe they're funny.
I'm pretty sure that he was probably a pretty funny comedian live--as evidenced by their TV appearances (c'mon, don't tell me you didn't laugh when Moe slapped his wig off in the hospital sketch and he had to ad-lib a bit to cover Moe and Larry's laughing).
So, long post slightly longer, yes, DeRita was a hell of a lot funnier in his younger, solo years before he joined the Stooges, but we also have to remember that the Stooges themselves were funnier before their conversion into the child-friendly performers that we see in the 60's films.
