Brown is known as a clean comedian, but he admits the influence that playing in burlesque had on him: "The public's low opinion of burlesque today has caused more than one prominent star to soft-pedal his (or her) humble beginnings in this field.
Brown's mother wrote him a letter saying that she would see the show in Detroit, he was ready to collapse because he "knew that two minutes of burlesque would kill her."

Joe happily claimed that he was the only youngster in show business who ran way from home to join the circus with the blessings of his parents.
Brown, a former circus clown, vaudevillian, and stage star (who also briefly played semi-pro baseball), made his film debut in 1928's Crooks Can't Win and subsequently appeared in several shorts and feature films, including the lead in Painted Faces (1929).
Brown, whose acrobatic dancing had always been a highlight in his earlier films, was perfectly cast as Captain Andy in Show Boat (1951), and popped up in the all-star casts of Around the World in 80 Days (1956) and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963).

Joe E. Brown (Cap'n Andy Hawks) nearly steals the show during the New Year's Eve scene as he continuously blares out, "Happy New Year," while William Warfield's rendition of "Old Man River" is riveting and powerful.
There are some good musical numbers performed, along with other appearances by such classic stars as Jane Wyman, Barbara Stanwyck, Jack Carson, Dennis Morgan, Joe E. Brown, and the Hollywood Canteen's founders, Bette Davis and John Garfield.
So although I did enjoy seeing so many great actors from yesteryear out of character for a change, I just wish that screenwriter and director Delmer Daves had come up with a better framing device to move the film along.
