Grant left Disney in 1949, but returned to the studio in the '90s, to contribute conceptual art for today's seemingly endless string of Disney blockbusters.
In fact, one of Grant's conceptual ideas became the basis for "Carnival of the Animals," a segment in the upcoming Fantasia 2000.
Joe Grant, who was honored as a Disney Legend in 1992, recently took time out for a very "animated" interview.

Grant had an exhibition of his work ("Joe Grant: Fifty Years in the Pen") at Walt Disney Feature Animation in 2003, and was honored by his Disney colleagues this past April with a special tribute at a departmental gathering.
Grant is survived by his two daughters, Carol Eve Grubb (the inspiration for "Baby Weems") and Jennifer Jean Grant Castrup, a grandson, Michael Joseph Grubb, a granddaughter, Diane Castrup, and a great grandson, Tristan Snyder.

Joe Grant, who the multi-purpose football field is named for, was the type of person that if he was still living would have been proud to see the field being used, as much as it is, for varied programs.
Because he developed a case of severe arthritis of the spine, Joe was declared ineligible for the armed forces, which kept him out of World War II and caused him to walk with a noticeable limp for the rest of his life.
Grant was always doing his best as a member of the School Board to improve the education for the youth of the town and it was during his watch on that Salem High was built.

Many of the panel members discussed how Joe was always leaving them little sketches and story ideas and Eric said he had his own "Joe drawer" and figured many of the other Disney people did too.
This video segment shows Joe discussing his opinion of 3D animation (he was for it, and felt that Walt would be too, but also felt that traditional hand drawn animation would never completely die out) and showing many of his sketches from over the years to Dean.
Joe garnered by far the biggest laugh from the audience of the evening when he showed Dean a frazzled caricature of himself and said that he drew it after seeing a particular movie from just a few years ago.

Early this morning I went to the Forest Lawn Mortuary in Glendale to attend the funeral of Joe Grant.
I believe he was the one who said Joe's daily routine was to wake up, have some Irish oatmeal, do the exercises he learned in the Air Force, then go to his drawing desk.
But after I completely dropped the ball and never scheduled an interview with Joe Grant before it got to the point that it was just too late, I felt like I should go and do something to connect with his memory and I am glad that I did.
