Weledeh MLA, Joseph (Joe) Handley, is the eighth Premier of the Northwest Territories.
Handley was first elected as the Member for Weledeh in the 14th Legislative Assembly on December 6th, 1999 after serving as a Deputy Minister for the Government of the Northwest Territories for more than 14 years.
Handley moved to the Northwest Territories in 1985 to assume the position of Deputy Minister of Education with the Government of the Northwest Territories.

Handley, the current finance minister, was acclaimed leader of the 15th legislative assembly, after two other hopefuls bowed out of the race.

Handley, who was also acclaimed in his Yellowknife riding of Weledeh, emphasized in his acceptance speech to the legislature that northerners need to see some of the social benefits from the N.W.T's resource-driven economic boom.
Outside the legislature, Handley said the fact he was handed the premiership without a single ballot being cast for him by either the public or his fellow members of the legislature suggests such divisions are less likely in the future.
Handley, a Metis from northern Saskatchewan, served as deputy minister in several departments including education and resources before being elected to the N.W.T. legislature in 1999.

An initial field test of the powdery white material late Friday was positive for the deadly organism, according to Joe Handley, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Reserve Command headquarters at Fort McPherson.
If confirmed, it would be the first positive anthrax discovery since Nov. 21, when a Connecticut woman died after being exposed to the bacterium.

Northwest Territories Finance Minister Joe Handley said the withdrawal of two of seven Native communities from last month's memorandum of understanding that would have given them one-third ownership of the line is threatening to close a narrow window of opportunity.
But Handley warned that splintering of Native support into two pipeline camps could scare away potential investors as well as the Delta producers' group.
Handley said 100 percent Native ownership would mean that aboriginals would be saddled with the full liability if there was a catastrophe with the pipeline, or the project turned out to be unprofitable.
