It has been more than 50 years since the great Joe Krol displayed his mastery in the Canadian Football League, and now that the league has finally decided to honour its past and present in a new marketing campaign, the 86-year-old former quarterback greets the news with wizened skepticism.
A strong argument could be made that Krol deserves membership in the final 50 when they are formally unveiled during this year's Grey Cup week in Winnipeg.
Krol was on hand for yesterday's announcement, looking hale and hearty and sporting a Toronto Argonauts baseball cap.

Let's start with Krol, a halfback who was better known as "King" and combined with Royal Copeland to form the "Gold Dust Twins", one of the best combinations in CFL history.
And how could anyone forget Krol, who won five Grey Cups in his stint with the Argos (1945-47, '50 and '52), as well as adding a sixth in 1943 with Hamilton.
Today, Krol has the time to look after his ever-growing family of two children (sons Richard, a former prospect in the New York Yankees farm system, and Peter), six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, three year-old Abigail, whom Krol calls the "apple of my eye".

Krol had a 'rifle arm' and Copeland weaved magical pass patterns through opposing secondaries, as frustrated defenders found it impossible to cover the elusive receiver.
Argo quarterback Al Dekdebrun (who had replaced Krol) taped thumbtacks to his fingers, which enabled him to grip the ball better and the Argos defeated the helpless Blue Bombers 13-0.
Krol, who was still handling the kicking chores, had turned the game in Toronto's favour when he faked a punt and ran through the slop for a crucial first down.

The crew of the fast attack submarine USS Buffalo (SSN 715) recently received the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon from Rear Adm. Joe Krol, Jr., Commander, Submarine Group Seven.
The joint endeavor was a great success, and the Buffalo’s performance drew praise from audiences extending far beyond the U.S. submarine community.
Krol was briefed on the operation by the submarine’s Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Bob Hennegan, and also extended his own congratulations to the crew as he presented the award.
