JOE MORRIS: Again, Mat Maneri and I, I have a couple of relationships with people that are controlled by total mind reading and Mat is one of them.
JOE MORRIS: Well, I have the idea that whatever that has happened in jazz was invented by somebody and then people interpreted it for a hundred years.

eye - Let freedom ring: Joe Morris - 01.28.99
Morris doesn't play as if rock never happened (he has a sporadic trio called Sweatshop, which sort of answers the question, "What would the Jimi Hendrix Experience have sounded like playing free jazz?"), but he eschews the distortion and electronic stomp boxes that have become popular in the rock era.
Morris uses such techniques pretty much all the way through "Renascent," an improvised duet with Maneri: sproingy hammer-on clusters give way to blurry, slip-sliding balalaika runs; then there are moments when you might find yourself unable to distinguish between guitar and violin.
Morris frequently stresses the primacy of melody in his playing, yet for much of his solo in the hyperactive "Radiant Flux" he spews out notes with such rapidity that he seems to be stippling in an area of potential melodic activity rather than actually playing melodically.

Only when Morris can squeeze through for a solo does the music really fly, and, even then, Morris is all virtuosity, with little in the way of unconventional technique, which we all know he's capable of.
Morris' presence, however, is notable for those who keep a close eye on the man's discography, as his bass shows itself to be far less individual than his guitar, and it's hard to remember that he's even on this record, as he's almost inaudible much of the time.

Joe Morris biography & discography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Born in New Haven, Connecticut on September 13, 1955, Joe Morris was the very first guitarist to release an album as a leader on Soul Note in that label's long and illustrious history.
He builds his playing on a broad variety of influences, from the harmolodic styles of Bern Nix and Blood Ulmer to West African string music; from ESP piano legend Lowell Davidson, something of a mentor to Morris, to John MacLaughlin and such horn players as Jimmy Lyons.
In the mid-'80s Morris started his own label, riti records (named after a one-stringed African instrument), and issued the first documents of his unique musical conception.

Here, Morris and his estimable bandmates pursue some common threads and ideas as they perform a little magic with blues riffs, recurring themes and toe-tapping meter which is quite evident on the first piece and title track, Underthru.
Morris works the inside with blazing single note lines on ”Two Busses And A Long Walk” as this piece commences with a somewhat subdued or loose vibe yet evolves climactically as Maneri follows suit with gritty, fierce improv via wistful statements.

Whit Dickey’s Trio Ahxoloxha, Prophet Moon / William Parker, Joe Morris and Hamid Drake, Eloping with the Sun
As so often with Morris, one gets the impression on this disc that he’s burrowing inside the music; a sense of an inner calm persists even as the complexities and volume build, and there are as many passages of cooled-out chordal dissonance as of Morris’s trademark agitated picking.
Such restraint makes his blistering solo on “Riptide” all the more striking: it’s so densely packed that it sounds disconcertingly like a cut-up, as if someone’s loaded a dozen bop guitar albums into a computer, crunched them all down to a single solo, and played it back too fast.
But elsewhere, Morris recedes to the edges of the music, his quiet revolving figures sometimes suggesting the rhythms of the world musics that obsess him, sometimes something mechanical.
