Satriani reportedly heard the news during a football training session where he immediately confronted his coach and announced that he was quitting to become a guitarist.

It's slower paced, less focussed and sounds like Joe and a bunch of like minded friends got together for an extended jamming session, and as a result it has the warmth that some people feel is missing from his other albums.
This is perhaps more of a Satriani album for Satriani, enjoying hanging out with musicians, rather than impressing the air-guitarists at the front of the auditorium, and in that way it might even be more 'honest'.
Ok, so Joe isn't exactly blazing away on this record, but what he does is with such an intense feeling not captured on any of his other albums.

Based on their stellar performance on "Mind Storm" and a few other tracks, I want to believe this is not simply a lack of talent or effort on the parts of Matt Bissonette (bass) and Jeff Campitelli (drums).

Judging by the title of this album, Joe Satriani must be implying right off the bat that his very considerable guitar playing abilities intend to create something otherworldly.
This was the point of Joe Satriani's career, third album Flying In A Blue Dream, where he decided to add his vocals to the arsenal, and while his voice isn't great, it's very competent in fitting the music, and surprisingly, it is those songs which are among the best highlights on this one.
As opposed to the much more pronounced bluesy feel of Joe Satriani, this album is a return of sorts to the feel of something like Surfing With The Alien, only with an updated late 90's sound and arguably a wider variety of guitar textures.
