Joe Simitian is locked in a tight race with Ted Lempert to be the Democratic Party's California State Senate nominee in the March 2 primary election.
Simitian was first elected to the State Assembly in 2000 and re-elected in November 2002.
Simitian listed a number of environmental concerns that he will place a priority on addressing if he is elected: air and water quality, coastal protection, cruise ship incineration of garbage, and reigning in the efforts of some California counties to build roads across federal land.

Simitian is rightfully proud of his 11th hour effort as the Legislature was adjourning to make sure East Palo Alto resident Rick Walker received a fair settlement after serving a 12-year prison term for a crime he did not commit.
Simitian is highly regarded by many of the industrial groups that keep jobs flowing to Silicon Valley, although he is not afraid to take on big business, as he has through his sponsorship of AB 68, the online privacy protection bill that is opposed by Microsoft and AOL.
Simitian was one of three Democratic members of the Assembly to vote against Gov. Schwarzenegger's $15 billion bond measure, although he may grudgingly support it on March 2.

Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian announced last week that he will serve as an elections supervisor for the Bosnian municipal elections to be held in Bosnia and Herzegovina Sept. 13-14.
Simitian and other members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe team will monitor the voting process and subsequent vote count in the elections in the former Yugoslavian republic.
Simitian was notified in late August by the U.S. State Department that he had been chosen and was selected in part because of his extensive municipal background, having served as a school board president and mayor in Palo Alto before joining the county board of supervisors, as well as his legal background.

County Supervisor Joe Simitian has invited local residents to apply for positions on the commission, which provides a forum for county staff, elected officials, and members of the public to work together to develop land-use policy.
