Joe Stump: There is a certain freedom and self indulgence that you get from the instrumental thing and no matter what the current trends are there will always be a cult core audience for those type of albums.
Joe Stump: As I said before the labels in Europe were small and didn't promote them properly also both the previous vocalists were no where near Mike's level especially for this style of music.
Joe Stump: I played on Mike's last solo album Animation, we became good friends and I asked if he was interested in doing the new ROT album, he thought the tunes were killer and agreed to sing with me.

After all, Stump says, "rock guitar is all about picking up the guitar and vibing out"—but attaining that kind of freedom in the shred metal style doesn't come by accident.
Stump's remarkable speed and virtuosity have been lauded in publications like Guitar World and Guitar Shop, and his 1994 album Night of the Living Shred was a Grammy semifinalist for best instrumental rock album.
Stump's DVD focuses on developing the physical and technical aspects of playing, but he is no stuffy, dry instructor.

Joe Stump - Rapid Fire Rondo reviewed by The House of Shred
Joe indicates that we should listen to Blackmore playing during "Lazy" on Made In Japan and we'll know where he's coming from, but I could have told you this was a Blackmore-influenced track.
There is a real maturity developing in Joe Stump's music, as he tries to beat the knock that he is simply an Yngwie Malmsteen wanna-be, a charge that has (understandably) been leveled at him repeatedly over the years.
But Stump's songs tend to be heavier and darker than Malmsteen's, not to mention that they are instrumental, which means that Stump's fretwork has to tell the story because there's no vocalist to handle that.

 Interview with Joe Stump
Joe: I think a lot of it is very very good, I think an effort like that, obviously, is brilliant, but there's also a lot of retreaded stuff on there if you're a fan of his playing.
Joe: Rob, I've heard his playing and I've heard a bunch of his stuff and he seems to me, you know, some of the things I do are like a hot-rodded version of Yngwie Malmsteen, Rob's kindof like that way to Steve Vai.
Joe: Um, I've only heard Tamas' stuff here, I mean I heard the "Guitar Hits" record where he does all the guitar covers [laughs] and I thought that was stupid, but you know the rest of his stuff is very good.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Stump, Joe - 2004 - Speed Metal Messiah Music Review
Stump has played in actual bands with singers but he doesn't seem to have the desire to let a singer hamper his style on his solo efforts, and that is what endears him to his small but strong fan base.
Speed Metal Messiah is Joe's return from his band oriented "Reign of Fire" project to the realm of solo guitar hero and it's everything you expect and not an iota more.
Of course Stump is perfectly happy to leave it all but behind in favor of a neo-classical break that only occasionally even stops to recall the riff.

If Joe incorporated different guitars, textures and stronger background instrumentation into his music then maybe his guitar prowess would be more appreciated by the listener.
As it stands, this album seems only to be a vehicle for Joe to showcase his guitar skills to air guitarists rather than keeping listeners attention past the initial first or second play.
