Joe Tascona was elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1995 as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Simcoe Centre, and was re-elected in 1999 in the newly formed riding of Barrie-Simcoe-Bradford, the largest electoral riding in Ontario.
Joe was instrumental in the establishment of an emergency clinic to service the south end of Barrie and Innisfil, as well as the expansion of York County Hospital, with new services including full cardiac care, MRI and birthing units.
Joe was born in Barrie in 1951, and received his law degree from Queen's University and an MBA from McMaster University.

Well, this means I could “purport” to be a vet, sign a document saying a fluffypoopoo is a pit bull within the meaning of this act, and they would not have to verify my signature and prove that I am indeed a member of the College.

Tascona is the son of Joe Tascona, a Barrie used car dealer whose advertising dubbed him as "Honest Joe, the working man's pal".
Tascona began his political career at the municipal level, serving from 1991 to 1995 as an alderman in the City of Barrie's second ward.
Tascona holds some socially conservative views, and circulated a petition against same-sex marriage in June 2003 (shortly after the Ontario Court of Appeal recognized the validity of such unions).

Under Bill 48 that has passed first reading in the legislature, petroleum prices would be frozen at their March 31 rates for a period of 90 days.
What is even more startling is that Tascona represents the riding of Barrie-Simcoe-Bradford, not known as being the most "progressive" area in the province.
Both the Reform and Alliance have done well in the area federally and it is an area that could go Conservative in the next federal election.

A few years ago the party tried to shore up Tascona's profile among commuters (read new voters moving here) by putting him in charge of a supposed task force looking into whether gas prices were being manipulated on summer long weekends by oil companies.
Tascona says his gov't will widen Highway 400 over his dead body and the 427 Extension must go ahead instead.
If Tascona needs Eves to help prop him up (and I'm not sure anymore that a visit from Eves is really doing any candidate any favours) then he might be in more trouble than anyone thought.

But Tascona says his constituents are telling him and many of his colleagues that the McGuinty government is not moving quickly enough to overhaul the system and ease owners' fears that their homes can be stolen from under their noses.
Tascona acknowledges that private members' bills are often "symbolic," but says they can be effective tools for prodding a government to take action.
