Big Joe and Pete played at that concert, which was the Woodstock of the 1930's, because anybody who played it became a star.
His greatest recordings were made in the mid-50's for Atlantic Records, these records are the cream of the crop of one of the all-time greatest singers of the blues.
Turner continued on, ending his recording career by singing an album for "Roomful Of Blues" in 1983.

Big Joe Turner (May 18, 1911 – November 24, 1985) was an American blues singer from Kansas City, Missouri.
Turner continued to record blues with small combos on several record labels, particularly and also appeared with the Count Basie Orchestra.
It is a mark of his dominance as a singer that he won the Esquire Magazine award for male vocalist in 1945, the Melody Maker award for best new vocalist in 1956 and the British award as top male singer in 1965.

Atlantic's recording strategy wisely involved recording Turner in a jazzier setting for the adult-oriented album market; to that end, a Kansas City-styled set (with his former partner Johnson at the piano stool) was laid down in 1956 and remains a linchpin of his legacy.
Turner stayed on at Atlantic into 1959, but nobody bought his violin-enriched remake of "Chains of Love" (on the other hand, a revival of "Honey Hush" with King Curtis blowing a scorching sax break from the same session was a gem in its own right).

“Joe Turner is the granddaddy of jump blues vocalists, a robust shouter who in one turn of phrase can encompass the sweaty thrill of great sex, the dangerous abandon of a weekend bender, and the anticipatory rush of a roadhouse saxophone break.
In those days, Turner's main gig was as a bartender, but his penetratingly soulful voice often could be heard in impromptu duets with the house pianist Pete Johnson, himself one of the best blues and boogie woogie ticklers to come down the pike.
Joe Turner would remain a consistently strong blues performer throughout most of his long career, but during the sessions contained on this album he received some of the most sympathetic accompaniment he would get on record, at least until he was rediscovered by jazzers and young bluesmen nearly 20 years later.

Turner followed up this song with a series of sometimes derivative but hugely enjoyable tracks in a similar vein, including 'Teenage Letter', 'Honey Hush' and 'Flip, Flop And Fly'.
Like too many other artists outlined in this short primer, Turner went through a period of relative obscurity (unusually though, it was the 60s that were tough for Joe) but he did undergo a partial revival in the 70s, releasing occasional albums along the way.

Joe was bigger than the rest of the kids his age and while still in his mid-teens, he was able to sneak into some of the clubs.

His band is a seasoned slayer, too - the pinnacle of the Kansas City sound, equal parts late-night smoky jazz and lowdown blues, with piercing trumpet, twin sax attack and moaning trombone that echoes Turner's swooping dynamics.
The rock steady swing of the drummer and penetrating stand-up bass are a granite-hard foundation, but the high point is Pete Johnson's boogie-woogie stride piano, which puts some serious ivory flame underneath that backbeat.
