N THE RING, Jersey Joe Walcott was the picture of perseverance.
Walcott, considered an excellent boxer and slick defensive fighter, challenged Joe Louis for the title in December of 1947 at Madison Square Garden.
After retiring, Walcott remained active in boxing as a referee and later as the chairman of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission.

Walcott was born in Merchantville, New Jersey, and he was often compared to former world Welterweight champion Joe Walcott.
Walcott retained the title with a 15 round decision victory against arch-enemy Charles, then, on September 23, 1952, he lost his title to Rocky Marciano by knockout in round 13.
Walcott dropped Marciano in round one and was ahead on all scorecards when Marciano landed what many have called the greatest punch in boxing history, to defeat Walcott by knockout.

Walcott scrapped with Mysterious Billy Smith for the welterweight title in 1898.
Walcott held his own against much larger fighters, such as Sam Langford and Philadelphia Jack O'Brien.
Walcott died in 1935 when struck by a car in Massillon, Ohio.
