Joe only becomes violent when he is attacked and tormented by the men and women of "civilization." So although Schoedsack, Cooper, and Co. did make another "giant ape in the city" movie, they turned the story on its head to give us a very interesting—and entertaining—commentary about mankind itself.
Joe's actions are a direct result of the situations he is put in, and the results of his actions are believable and natural.
The truck Joe is hiding in has to stop to get air in the tire, then a bridge is out and the truck gets stuck in the soft soil of the construction site, etc. This shouldn't be a problem for younger viewers, but it is a weak point in an otherwise excellent plot.

When Mighty Joe Young first reached screens in 1949, nearly everyone recognized it as an attempt to re-create the magic and mystique of King Kong.
In fact, a great deal of effort is undertaken to make Joe a likable character (as opposed to a walking special effect, a la Godzilla) -- he is shown to be intelligent, childlike, and gentle (except when provoked).
Joe is a masterpiece of special effects wizardry, looking more real than any giant primate ever to walk across the silver screen.

Joe is essentially a special effect here, but it is incredible how life-like the character looks as it runs, while the camera pans 360 degrees around it.
Soon, though, the hunters that left both Joe and Jill orphans realizes that they're the new attraction in America, and they set off for revenge on Joe, who took two fingers from the main poacher,Strasser, who is a stock, cliched villian.
There is a lot about "Mighty Joe Young" that works; the performances of the lead actors, the excellent technical and special effects work; but the movie drags a little too much during it's mid-section for comfort.
