Joe van Niekerk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Johann "Joe" van Niekerk (born 14 May 1980 in Port Elizabeth) is a South African rugby player, who generally plays either as a flanker or number 8.
After starring for the South Africa Schools, under-19, and under-21 sides, and captaining at all three levels, he received the rare honor of being called up to the Springboks directly from the U21 side in 2001, before ever playing a game in the Currie Cup or Super 12.
Van Niekerk has had injury troubles throughout his senior-level career; however, when healthy, he is generally considered to be competitive with virtually any back-row player.

In Krige&#;s absence (A fractured sternum and a thumb injury contrived to keep him on the sidelines) Skinstad has been in charge of WP in the Currie Cup, but they have struggled in recent weeks, losing their last three matches, with their tight five unable to assert any authority.
As a result, Skinstad&#;s own performances took a dip, prompting speculation that Van Niekerk, who has, at times, played at No.8 for the Lions in the Currie Cup, and a rejuvenated Rassie Erasmus, would challenge his position in the Bok line-up.
Joe van Niekerk could find himself at No.8, his preferred position, when the Springboks play France in Marseille on 9 November, leaving Wannenburg, Erasmus and Venter to battle it out for one of the vacant flank positions alongside captain Krige.
