CHARLES SUTHERLAND (May 29,1829 - May 10, 1895), Surgeon General, December 23, 1890 - May 29, 1893, was born in Philadelphia, the son of Joel Barlow and Mary (Read) Sutherland, of Scotch ancestry.
He was promoted to the grade of major and surgeon on April 16, 1862, and at about the same time assigned to duty at Fort Warren, Mass., then a prison camp for the captured Confederate officers who were held there to the number of several hundred.
With the reorganization of the army at the close of the Civil War, Sutherland had the backing of Surgeon General Barnes and of General Grant for one of the positions of medical purveyor which was given him with the grade of lieutenant colonel on July 28, 1866.

The General and his wife, Elizabeth Wirt Brewer Sutherland, born at Annapolis, Maryland, 28 August 1847 and who died at Washington, D.C., 18 February 1918, along with serveral of their children (see below) are buried in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery.

The Barlows subsequently constructed a family burial vault on the grounds of their new estate, and had the body of Abraham Baldwin transferred from Rock Creek Cemetery to the new vault.
Several years later, Joel Barlow died in Europe while on a mission from President Madison to Napoleon; he was buried in Zarniwica, Poland.

I had assumed that the words "one-step" meant that when I entered a name at the top of the page that the database would search each folder all at once in "one-step." I was wrong.
I found lists of Barlows and Ramsays who lived in PEI that were all related to our relatives.
The Barlow mansion in PEI belonging to John Barlow, born in England in 1808...moved to Prince Edward Island in 1832.
