Joel Coen was born November 29, 1954 and Ethan followed on September 21, 1957.
The Coens' films also contain references to their other films - in Intolerable Cruelty the scene where Massey visits the senior partner is reminiscent of the scene in The Big Lebowski where the Dude meets Lebowski after Bunny's kidnap.
The Coen brothers' earlier films (with the exception of Miller's Crossing) made extensive use of wide-angle lenses, which are the preferred lenses of their first cinematographer, Barry Sonnenfeld.

The Coens subvert the myth of the suffering playwright with their depiction of Barton Fink as a pompous and self-absorbed author who is out of touch with the very people he claims to write for, and about.
Joel and Ethan Coen do not employ pastiche to resolve a dearth of ideas, they actively examine the texts they draw from as a means to building a bridge to the past.

 The Coens
Working alongside his brother Joel, Ethan Coen is widely considered one of the most visionary and idiosyncratic filmmakers of the late 20th century.
Their next major effort (after Crimewave, a 1985 film they wrote that was directed by Sam Raimi), 1987's Raising Arizona was a screwball comedy miles removed from the dark, violent content of their previous movie, and it won over critics and audiences alike.
In 2003, Ethan and Joel were credited as executive producers on Terry Zwigoff's hit comedy Bad Santa largely due to the fact that the origin of the film's story came from the Coens.

The aim of this paper is to examine how the Coen brothers' and Jarmusch's choice of the musical field as a territory for their reconstructions of the South enables them to collate distinct artistic domains and genres in their representations of "border incidents" between stories, legends and history.

The Coen Brothers are fond of doing genre movies, and Miller's Crossing is their beautifully executed and damn-near perfect gangster film.
The Coen brothers have certainly made some superb films, including Fargo and The Big Lebowski, but I have to say Miller's crossing is arguably one of the most boring films I have ever seen.
