Joel Hodgson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hodgson decided that he liked his own bomb better, and left the NBC prop in his hotel room.
In contemporary interviews, Joel said he was uncomfortable with acting and being in front of the camera, citing that as the reason he quit the show just as he and MST3K began to gain popularity.
Hodgson reportedly chose MST3K head writer Michael J. Nelson to be his replacement as host because he felt that Nelson was a natural leader, a gifted comedian (as well as a musician, handling most of the show's musical numbers), and, additionally, he thought Nelson looked good standing next to the show's puppets.

Joel was more a fatherly figure to the 'Bots and helped them get through all the bad movies the crew watched until Mike came along.
Joel's tenure as host was marked by "invention exchanges", where Joel and his mad scientist tormentors would come up with wacky inventions in a contest with each other.
These sketches were a good match for Hodgson, who began his career as a prop comic; indeed, many of the inventions were items originally found in his standup act.

Joel Hodgson began his career as a stand-up comic, magician, and gizmo inventor before retiring at the age of 24.
Returning from exile in the late '80s, Hodgson cemented his place in pop-culture history by creating Mystery Science Theater 3000, the cult TV show in which he and a group of robots watched and mocked B-movies.
There, the brothers have worked on a number of projects which have allowed Hodgson to continue tinkering away behind the scenes, and which seem to be paving the way for larger things.

When a person is successful at anything (be it sports, music, writing, or simply making money), they sometimes get lauded as 'genius' if they are either exceptional at it, or if the manner in which they made their mark was uncommon.
Joel Hodgson is a genius - let's get that straight from the outset - an unassuming, Middle-American Everyman who has a grasp for the uncommon idea and the uncanny ability to assemble a spirited team to put those ideas in motion.
The TV Wheel may not be wholly original, but the energy and creativity Joel brought to this simple concept outweighed any kind of composite plagiarism.

My complaint with these is usually all MST3K episodes are interspersed with skits where Joel and the ‘Bots would expand on the theme of a movie or a short introduction, and were some of the funniest bits of the show.

Dr. Daniel's Movie Emergency - "Goodbye, MST3K" - Joel Hodgson, Mike Nelson
Joel Hodgson, a stand-up comic and magician, created the show in '88, wedding the practice of zinging bad movies from the peanut gallery with a bizarrely comedic sci-fi setting that found him trapped in a satellite with a handful of robotic puppets.
The Brains, led by Hodgson and head writer Michael J. Nelson, took the concept to amazing heights of hilarity, employing the best elements of comic writing -- brilliant phraseology, dead-on parodies, sarcastic jabs, tongue-in-cheek jingles, slick puns, and best of all, making an art form out of the obscure reference.
You had to pay attention to enjoy it, and that's probably why it constantly confounded programming executives and kept it on the brink of extinction for most of its life.
