	The Avengers (Soundtrack) by Joel McNeely
		Joel McNeely’s score for this remake of the 60’s hit series is very listenable.
		For this movie, McNeely truly excels in his action and suspense cues which is what kept me from turning the DVD off entirely.
		This is possibly McNeely's finest work to date it's just a shame that it comes from such a terrible film and didn't give McNeely the boost into the mainstream he so richly deserved.

		He is also building a reputation for conducting and promoting classic film scores of other composers in particular he has made a number of recordings of the work of Bernard Herrmann.

	Young Indiana Jones Chronicles: Vol 2 (Laurence Rosenthal and Joel McNeely) soundtrack review
		Joel McNeely's score for the episode "German East Africa 1916/The Congo" is more dramatic, with more bold orchestrations.
		Perhaps it is also worth mentioning that McNeely uses the theme from Johann Sebastian Bach's famous choral "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde" ("Jesus Joy of Man's Desiring") (He explains why in the liner notes) and that "Schweitzer Says Goodbye" clearly is a rip-off of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Adagio" from his Clarinet Concerto.
		McNeely's score for "London 1916" opens with a charming, but short, march written in the style of Mozart and Haydn, and arranged for wind ensemble.

	Filmtracks: Mulan II (Joel McNeely)
		Perhaps the frustrating aspect of this entire scenario is that McNeely's work is really quite good for these awful films, and it goes to show that Disney hasn't completely cut off their budget in the music area of these sequels.
		McNeely does seem to have studied the score from the feature film, and does his best to skirt the probable legalities that hinder direct transferring of Goldsmith themes by incorporating ideas similar to Goldsmith's in clever ways.
		Overall, for film score collectors, and especially those of you who bemoan the absence of Joel McNeely from the spotlight, Mulan II is a surprisingly rewarding score despite the weakness of the film and its songs.

		Joel McNeely's career has often rather unfortunately fallen under the long shadow cast by his mentor and inspiration, John Williams.
		The main theme is a fairly slight melody that doesn't impose itself to strongly on the listener, but combines civility with melancholy together with the required romantic overtones.
		In fact, the entire approach is fairly old fashioned, although McNeely doesn't indulge too fully in golden age Hollywood excess and retains plenty of restraint throughout.

		McNeely makes full use of his large orchestra, and I was especially happy to see that rather than attempt to mimic a "007" type of main avenger theme, he plays it more in a subdued mood.
		This is due to the fact that the Avengers are supposed to be hip, but also because the story of the Avengers takes place in a land called "Avengersland" by the producers and director.
		For the most fun, skip to the end and listen to the "Avengers Theme," which is really a wonderful rendition of the older TV theme, brought to a large orchestra.

		McNeely is a George Lucas discovery who has scored episodes and TV movies of Young Indiana Jones, as well as Lucas' film Radioland Murders and the recent rehashing of Flipper.
		McNeely seems to be trying to compose music in the Williams/Star Wars vein, but rather like the soundtrack album from Battlestar Galactica, it reaches my ears as John Williams pastiche.
		Specifically, McNeely conducts the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus, a combined ensemble with a complement that rivals the size of Williams' favored London Symphony.

		Possibly a strange choice, but his score to Soldier and extra music for Air Force One, to help out Goldsmith when he was pushed for time, proved that he has the stamina for trashy action films, although Virus demonstrates that he can only just about cut it providing interesting underscore for trashy horror.
		However, at over 50 minutes, there are quite a few dead spots where nothing of consequence happens and a couple of cues, Turkey Hunting or Anchor's Away, could easily have been omitted for a more consistently enjoyable album.
		McNeely is actually a pretty decent action composer and seems to have developed his style away from being a Williams clone, but most composers would have been hard pushed to come up with anything decent for Virus and it's to his credit that it has so many fine moments.

		It was structured almost like a James Bond type of opening, and McNeely responds with a jazzy, orchestral theme that whips along at a good pace and holds the screen very well.
		As with McNeely's last effort Soldier, his action music is sounding more and more like Jerry Goldsmith's, and I don't know if this was intentional or not; McNeely had, only a few years ago, reminded me more of John Williams.

		The main theme of Virus retains some of trademark french horn and trombone styles that can be heard in other McNeely themes, however, this one is decidedly darker, with hints of the minor key influences that flourish in horror scores by John Debney and Christopher Young.
		The fully orchestral performances of these themes in the first two tracks and finale will not disappoint you --they compensate well for the mundane underscore that occupies much of the middle of the album.
		McNeely is slowly, but surely beginning to establish his own orchestrally rich style as a composer, and I like where he's headed.
