SF Signal: REVIEW: Crossover by Joel Shepherd
In reading Joel Shepherd's first novel, Crossover, I am struck by the importance of a reader caring about the main character.
That character doesn't necessarily have to be a hero or even likable as a person, but they do have to be interesting and have something about them to which the reader can relate.
It's as if Shepherd was trying so hard to avoid the cliché that he left out the one aspect of her predicament that would have endeared her to the audience.

Review | Crossover by Joel Shepherd
I thought Shepherd could have cut maybe 30 to 50 pages of this book since there were times of "okay, we got it," both in scenes of violence and the political infighting.
Shepherd shows, avoids telling and lets the reader draw her own conclusions, thank you.
Shepherd even leaves this first book (first of three) in a solid place, where you can go to the next one, while at the same time having a distinct ending to this story.

Shepherd has a knack for capturing the human spirit--there are pages when the naturalness of the dialogue just bleeds off the page.
I don't care about the logic of this, because Shepherd sets up political systems where, according to one ideology, history and culture is welcomed and not shunned in the face of increasingly advanced technology.

Joel Shepherd has written a cool book in CROSSOVER, both a kick-ass android political action tale and a deconstruction of humanity, with both aspects are equally rewarding.
It turns out that Shepherd has a few interesting ideas about what it means to be human, and as character after believable character is introduced and becomes a part of the quilt of CROSSOVER’s central message, the impossible happens, and the combat is made that much more powerful because you start caring about everyone.
That, of course, is a grave sin in what was supposed to be a popcorn android action “sci-fi” book, and it took the supergeniuses of Pyr Books to recognize the relevance and genius of Shepherd’s novel, finally bringing it to North America after being published to wide acclaim in the author’s native Australia in 1999.

Bowing to the Future: Crossover about to Cross Over
Joel's book has enough kick ass action sequences, sex, and neat SFnal concepts to be a nice commercial hit, but it's layered, nuanced, and savvy enough to put it above the usual girl-robot run-of-the-mill norm.
Joel's got a knack for describing the complexities and realities of politics, whether its on an interplanetary scale, between departments or coworkers in a government office, or between people in romantic entanglements.
Graced with a yen for human art almost as insatiable as her libido, Kresnov first tries to melt anonymously into Tanusha, the sybaritic capital of Callay, a planet of the League's galactic archenemy, the Federation.

Crossover: A Cassandra Kresnov Novel by Joel Shepherd
Joel Shepherd's Cassandra Kresnov trio of books has already been released in his native Australia but in the US, the futuristic tale of a synthetic human has now been published by Prometheus.
With a tone that feels very political and gritty, Shepherd's 'Crossover' introduces Cassandra 'Sandy' Kresnov, an artificial 'GI' - human in appearance but created to be stronger, smarter and an altogether more dangerous soldier for the rebellious League's fight against the Earth-centric Federation.
Shepherd has obviously gone out of his way to not make this a typical android/human story and Cassandra acts like a real person would, instead of pages of existential talk.

Crossover was the 1999 breakout novel for Australian Joel Shepherd, and the first Cassandra Kresnov story.
The author, Joel Shepherd, is Australian, but he's evidentially traveled quite a bit around Asia, working in part for a family firm selling Australian books to international schools.
This lends a solid feel to his integration of Indian, Chinese, and Arab characters into the story, and his future world of Callay is a nicely balanced myriad of cultures.

I’ve been mulling the idea of writing a piece about my skepticism over global warming, but now it looks like I don’t really have to; my friend and fellow Pyr SF novelist Joel Shepherd has written it for me.
There is an even bigger difference between environmentalists and those who accept AGW (anthropogenic global warming), which Shepherd himself prefers to ignore.
