Joetsu Shinkansen (上越旰幹線) is a high-speed railway line connecting Tokyo and Niigata, Japan, via Tohoku Shinkansen, operated by the East Japan Railway Company.
The line was initially planned to terminate at Shinjuku Station, but economic considerations pushed JNR to merge the line with the existing Tohoku Shinkansen line at Omiya.

The Eidan Ginza Line (営団銀座線) is a metro line in Tokyo, Japan, administered by the Teito Rapid Transit Authority.
It is the oldest underground railway line in Japan: the portion between Ueno and Ginza was completed by the Tokyo Underground Railway on December 30, 1927.
The line reached Shibuya in 1939, although the segment west of Aoyama-itchome was operated by a separate company, Tokyo Rapid Railway, from 1937 to the TRTA's consolidation in 1941.

The Joetsu Line is a major rail line in Japan.
Part of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) system, it runs from Takasaki, in Gunma Prefecture to Miyauchi Station in Nagaoka, Niigata, in Niigata Prefecture, linking the northwestern Kanto region and the Koshinetsu part of the Chubu region.
The 2004 Chuetsu Earthquake seriously damaged the Joetsu Line, causing JR East to close it for about two months.

If simple four-tracking had been adapted, conventional Tokaido line of old railway system taking at least 6 hours between Tokyo and Osaka would have been completely defeated by air and highway which grew rapidly after 1960s, and the existence of France TGV and other high speed railways would be questionable.
Conventional Joetsu line had suffered from snow in winter and trains were often delayed or stopped, so Shinkansen improves reliability of transportation during winter.
Part of experimental linear motor car line was completed in Yamanashi in 1997, and it is said to be possible to use as practical transport despite some problems such as cost and durability remain.
