  Joey Curtis - Definition, explanation
Joey Curtis (1925 – May 13, 2004) was a former professional boxer, referee and business owner who was licensed to officiate bouts in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Curtis is best remembered, however, for two specific fights: On June 26, 1981, at Las Vegas, Lupe Pintor was defending his WBC world Bantamweight championship against Jovito Rengifo, who was attempting to become Peru's first world boxing champion.
Fearful of another tragedy, Curtis stopped the fight to prevent Weaver from further punishment (On May 20, 1983, Dokes and Weaver held a rematch, with Dokes retaining the title with a fifteen round tie).

Joey Curtis is the referee who stopped the World Boxing Association's heavyweight title fight between Mike Weaver and Michael Dokes at 63 seconds of the first round Dec. 10 -and who could not help hearing the ringside cries of ''fix, fix, fix'' that accompanied his decision.
Two weeks later, Curtis now says that he spent several sleepless nights after that Las Vegas bout but that he is convinced he was right when he awarded the fight to Dokes, making him the new champion.
In retrospect, Curtis says, a quick end to the bout was inevitable after Dokes's early knockdown of Weaver.

You can barely hear the dialogue (if Curtis had paid more attention to the sound design and, you know, making sure we can understand what it is the characters are saying) and the quick cut editing and stylized neon cuts are just, well, boring.

 Variety.com - Reviews - Quattro Noza
Joey Curtis' directorial debut takes a highly impressionistic look at the world of illegal street racing in Southern California, shot through with an elemental "Romeo and Juliet" format that triggers an unnecessarily nihilistic ending.
Due to digital image manipulation that pushes the picture to the boundary between narrative and avant-garde filmmaking, slightly overlong effort is full of striking, fresh visual interludes showing cars, speed and the sensations surrounding the scene.
Such a sequence comes early in the film, and the way Curtis shoots and cuts makes it thrilling, even though the viewer has no vested interested in any of the drivers, who are a bunch of unintroduced young kids.

No, it’s not a tale for which one needs nearly two hours to tell, but interspersed are several aptly named drag races, completely devoid of dramatic substance, that are seemingly inserted into the script solely to show off helmer Joey Curtis’ experiments with high-definition video.
To his credit, the cars are creatively shot -- with the camera positioned inside, alongside and on the hood of the vehicles -- to great effect, and techniques such as slow motion, split screen, distorted picture, blurred headlights, superimpositions, negative images and intentional flaws (the flare from reflected light), are visually engaging.

Imagine Vin Diesel and Paul Walker's street-racing saga "The Fast and the Furious" transformed into a lyrical, stylized romantic tragedy and one would have some idea of what Joey Curtis' unsparing yet beguiling "Streets of Legend" is like.
Of course, street racing is steeped in danger and folly, but Curtis, who was a street racer, and his virtuoso cinematographer, Derek Cianfrance, know how to exude the intoxicating allure it presents to young people, crossing ethnic and socioeconomic lines in its appeal.
"Streets of Legend," which is dedicated to the memory of experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage, who taught Curtis at the University of Colorado, is a terrific calling card for the young director.
